4 Days Gorilla and Golden Monkey Tracking Uganda. This 4 days gorilla and golden monkey tracking Uganda safari takes you to the heart of the Virunga volcanoes for two of Africa’s most memorable primate encounters. In just four days, you will spend an hour with a family of endangered mountain gorillas, watch rare golden monkeys leap through the bamboo, and explore the dramatic landscapes and living cultures of Uganda’s far south-west.
The tour is based around Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, the place where “silver meets gold”: silverback gorillas and golden monkeys share the same volcanic forest. It starts and ends in Kigali, Rwanda, using the short, scenic route through the Cyanika border, so you spend less time on the road and more time with the primates.
At Pick and Transfer Safaris, we are based in Kisoro, minutes from Mgahinga, and we specialise in short, affordable gorilla safaris starting from Kigali. Below you will find the full day-by-day itinerary, what is included, permit prices, accommodation options, travel tips and answers to common questions.
Four days is the ideal length for a focused primate safari. It gives you a relaxed arrival day, separate days for gorilla trekking and golden monkey tracking, and time to enjoy the area’s scenery and culture without rushing. Because Mgahinga is the closest Uganda gorilla park to Kigali, you avoid the long drives required from Entebbe.
Uganda gorilla permits also cost about half the price of Rwanda permits, so starting in Kigali and trekking in Uganda gives you excellent value. And with only eight gorilla permits issued per day in Mgahinga, your encounter will be intimate and uncrowded.
Driving time: about 3–4 hours, plus border formalities | Overnight: Kisoro area | Meals: lunch and dinner
Your adventure begins in Rwanda’s capital. Your driver-guide meets you at Kigali International Airport or your hotel in Kigali City, usually in the morning. After a warm welcome and a short briefing about the tour, you load your luggage into a comfortable 4×4 safari vehicle and set off towards the Virunga volcanoes.
The road north from Kigali winds through some of East Africa’s most beautiful countryside. Terraced hillsides, banana plantations, tea fields and bustling market towns roll past your window. Your guide will share stories about Rwanda’s history, its remarkable recovery and its people, and stop for photos along the way.
After about two hours you reach Musanze (formerly Ruhengeri), the gateway to Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park. On clear days, the Virunga volcanoes rise dramatically above the town. If time allows, you may stop for a coffee or a stretch before continuing to the border.
From Musanze, a short drive brings you to the Cyanika (Kyanika) border. Your guide will assist with exit formalities on the Rwandan side and entry formalities on the Ugandan side. Have your passport, visa or e-visa approval and yellow fever vaccination certificate ready. On most days the crossing is quick and straightforward.
Once in Uganda, the road continues to Kisoro town, nestled beneath the volcanoes. You check into your accommodation, enjoy lunch and take the afternoon to rest after your journey. Depending on your energy and the time of arrival, you may choose an optional afternoon activity:
In the evening, your guide briefs you on the gorilla trek, checks that you have the right clothing and gear, and confirms the plan for the next morning. Dinner and overnight in the Kisoro area.
If you prefer to start in Uganda, we can begin the tour from Entebbe or Kampala. The road journey to Kisoro takes about eight to ten hours via Masaka, Mbarara and Kabale, with stops at the Equator and scenic viewpoints. Alternatively, a scheduled or charter flight from Entebbe to Kisoro saves most of a day. For an Entebbe start, we usually recommend adding a day to break up the drive, for example with a night at Lake Bunyonyi. Our 3 Days Uganda Gorilla Safari from Entebbe can also be extended to include golden monkeys.
Visa rules and fees can change, so please check the latest entry requirements before you travel. Our team can advise you when you book.
Activity: gorilla trekking | Overnight: Kisoro area | Meals: breakfast, packed lunch and dinner
Today is the highlight of your safari: a face-to-face encounter with endangered mountain gorillas in their natural home.
After an early breakfast, your driver-guide takes you to Mgahinga’s Ntebeko park headquarters, at the foot of the volcanoes. You will usually arrive around 7:00–7:30 am. Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers check permits and welcome you before giving a briefing on gorilla trekking rules, safety and the gorilla family you will visit. There is often a short cultural performance by local community members to start the day.
Mgahinga has one habituated gorilla family open to visitors: the Nyakagezi group. Once famous for crossing between Uganda, Rwanda and Congo, the family has now settled in Mgahinga. It is known for having several silverbacks living together peacefully, an unusual and fascinating social structure. Because only one family can be visited, just eight trekkers meet the Nyakagezi group each day, making this one of the most exclusive gorilla experiences in Africa.
Early each morning, trackers head into the forest to find the gorillas from where they nested the night before. When the briefing ends, your group of up to eight trekkers sets off with a ranger guide and armed escorts. The trail climbs the lower slopes of the volcanoes, through farmland edges, bamboo thickets and montane forest, with sweeping views of Muhavura, Gahinga and Sabyinyo.
The length of the trek depends on where the gorillas are feeding. It may take anywhere from one to several hours to reach them. The terrain can be steep and muddy, so take your time, drink water regularly and use a walking stick. We strongly recommend hiring a porter at the trailhead; porters carry your bag, help you on difficult sections and earn valuable income for their families.
When the rangers locate the family, you leave your bags and walking sticks with the porters and quietly approach with your camera. For one unforgettable hour, you watch the gorillas feed on bamboo shoots and leaves, groom each other, nap and play. Young gorillas tumble and climb while silverbacks keep a calm watch. Your ranger guide will position the group so everyone has a good view while keeping a safe distance.
Many travellers describe this hour as one of the most moving experiences of their lives. Take photos, but also take time simply to watch and absorb the moment.
After your hour with the gorillas, you hike back to the trailhead and receive your gorilla trekking certificate. Your driver-guide returns you to your lodge for a hot shower, a late lunch and a well-earned rest. In the evening, share stories and photos over dinner before preparing for tomorrow’s golden monkey adventure.
Because Mgahinga issues only eight gorilla permits per day, they can sell out quickly. If Mgahinga permits are unavailable for your dates, we can arrange your gorilla trek in the southern sectors of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, such as Rushaga or Nkuringo, which are also within reach of Kisoro. You will still track golden monkeys in Mgahinga on Day 3.
Activities: golden monkey tracking, plus an optional afternoon activity | Overnight: Kisoro area | Meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner
After the intensity of yesterday’s gorilla trek, today brings a lighter, livelier primate experience in the bamboo forests of Mgahinga.
After breakfast, you return to the Ntebeko headquarters for a briefing on golden monkey tracking. Then your ranger guide leads you into the bamboo zone on the lower slopes of the volcanoes, where habituated golden monkeys live.
Golden monkeys are an endangered primate found only in the Albertine Rift, mainly in the Virunga volcanoes. Their striking golden-orange backs and cheeks glow against the green bamboo, and they are fast, agile and endlessly curious. The walk is usually shorter and gentler than a gorilla trek, often one to a few hours in total.
Once you find the group, you spend one hour watching them feed on bamboo shoots, chase each other and leap from stem to stem. Golden monkeys move quickly, so photographers should use a fast shutter speed and be patient; the best shots often come when the monkeys settle down to feed.
Golden monkey habituation experience: if you are a keen photographer or primate enthusiast, ask about upgrading to the longer golden monkey habituation experience, which lets you spend several hours with researchers and a group of monkeys being habituated.
After lunch, discover the culture of the Batwa, the original forest dwellers of the Virungas. On the Batwa Trail, Batwa guides lead you through the forest and demonstrate how their ancestors hunted, gathered honey, identified medicinal plants and made fire. The walk ends at Garama Cave, a large lava-tube cave once used as a refuge, where the Batwa perform traditional songs. It is an educational and moving experience that directly supports the Batwa community.
If you prefer to relax, head to Lake Mutanda, a peaceful lake near Kisoro with islands and spectacular views of the Virunga volcanoes. A gentle canoe trip with a local guide lets you watch birds, fishermen and village life along the shore. It is a perfect way to unwind after two days of primate tracking.
Join a guided walk through the farming villages around Kisoro. Meet local families, learn how crops such as potatoes, sorghum and beans are grown on the fertile volcanic soils, and visit local craft groups. Your guide will translate and help you connect with the community.
Return to your lodge for dinner and a final night beneath the volcanoes.
Driving time: about 3–4 hours, plus border formalities | Meals: breakfast and lunch
After a relaxed breakfast with views of the volcanoes, check out and begin your journey back to Kigali. You cross the Cyanika border into Rwanda and drive through Musanze and the green hills back to the capital.
Depending on your flight time, you may have the chance to visit a Kigali highlight, such as the Kigali Genocide Memorial, a craft market or a local café, before your guide drops you at Kigali International Airport or your hotel. Your 4 days gorilla and golden monkey tracking Uganda safari comes to an end, but the memories of silverbacks and golden monkeys will last a lifetime.
If you have more time, you can easily add days in Rwanda after the tour, such as our 2 Days Volcanoes Gorilla Trek from Kigali for a second gorilla encounter or our 3 Days Rwanda Gorilla Tracking and Cultural Tour. For Rwanda destination ideas, see Kenlink Tours’ Rwanda safaris page.

Gorilla and golden monkey tracking take place all year. The dry seasons, June to September and December to February, offer firmer trails and clearer volcano views, and are the busiest periods, so book early. The wet seasons, March to May and October to November, bring more rain and mud but fewer visitors and greener landscapes, and from 2027 discounted gorilla permits in April, May and November. Because Mgahinga is at high altitude, it can be cold in the mornings and evenings, and rain is possible at any time.
Gorilla trekking in Mgahinga involves walking on steep, uneven and sometimes muddy ground at high altitude. You do not need to be an athlete, but you should be comfortable walking for several hours. Golden monkey tracking is generally easier. Prepare with regular walks or hikes before your trip, hire a porter on trek day and let your guide know about any health concerns. Visitors must be at least 15 years old for gorilla trekking. Before booking, please also read the booking and cancellation terms of your operator; for example, see Kenlink Tours’ terms and conditions for the kind of information a reputable company provides.

Independent travellers can follow this itinerary on a self-drive basis with a well-maintained 4×4. Kenlink Tours offers car hire for Uganda and Rwanda, and we can still book your gorilla and golden monkey permits and recommend accommodation. For first-time visitors, however, a guided safari is usually easier, especially for the border crossing and mountain roads.
