Can i start my Uganda tour from Kigali? Yes, you can start your Uganda tour from Kigali, and for many travellers it is the best way to do it. Kigali International Airport in Rwanda is only about four hours by road from Uganda’s southwestern gorilla parks, compared with nine to ten hours from Entebbe. You simply fly into Kigali, meet your driver-guide at the airport and cross into Uganda by road through one of the land borders.
Thousands of travellers start their Uganda tours in Kigali every year. It is legal, safe and well organised. Tour operators like Pick and Transfer Safaris run these cross-border trips every week, handling the vehicle, the border formalities and all your bookings in both countries.
This guide answers the practical questions travellers ask us most: how the airport pick-up works, what happens at the border, which visa you need, how long the drives take, what kinds of tours start in Kigali and when it makes more sense to start in Entebbe instead.
Starting in Kigali is a smart choice if:
Starting in Entebbe is usually better if your tour focuses on northern or central Uganda, such as Murchison Falls National Park, Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary or Kidepo Valley. We compare both options in detail below.
It means your safari begins and usually ends at Kigali International Airport or a Kigali hotel, even though most of your activities take place in Uganda. Your driver-guide meets you in Kigali in a private 4×4 safari vehicle, drives you across the border into Uganda, stays with you throughout the tour and brings you back to Kigali at the end.
You do not need to change vehicles or guides at the border. The same driver-guide accompanies you from start to finish. All our cross-border trips are listed under our Uganda gorilla safaris starting from Kigali.
Shorter journeys to the gorillas. From Kigali, you reach Kisoro in about three and a half hours and Bwindi’s Rushaga or Nkuringo sectors in four to four and a half hours. From Entebbe, the same trip takes nine to ten hours. On a short tour, that can mean an entire extra day for activities instead of driving.
Lower total cost on short trips. Fewer driving days mean fewer nights of accommodation, less fuel and fewer days of vehicle hire. For a gorilla-focused trip, starting in Kigali is often the cheapest option.
Uganda’s cheaper gorilla permits. A Uganda gorilla permit costs USD 800 for foreign non-residents, compared with USD 1,500 in Rwanda. Starting in Kigali but trekking in Uganda gives you the best of both worlds.
A calm, safe arrival. Kigali is famous for being clean, orderly and safe. Many travellers enjoy spending their first night there to recover from the flight before heading to the gorillas.
Easy to add Rwanda. From Kigali, you can add golden monkeys in Volcanoes National Park, a Big Five safari in Akagera National Park or a relaxing stay on Lake Kivu.
Stunning scenery from day one. The road from Kigali to the Cyanika border passes terraced hills, tea estates and the Virunga Volcanoes. It is one of the most beautiful drives in Africa.
Starting in Kigali is not perfect for every trip. Here are the honest trade-offs:
For most gorilla and southwestern Uganda tours, these small trade-offs are far outweighed by the time and money you save.
Use this quick guide to decide where to start:
| Your trip focus | Best starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Gorilla trekking only (1 – 3 days) | Kigali | About 4 hours to the gorilla parks |
| Gorillas and Lake Bunyonyi | Kigali | Short drive via the Katuna border |
| Gorillas, chimps and Queen Elizabeth (5 – 7 days) | Kigali or open-jaw | Either works; open-jaw avoids backtracking |
| Uganda and Rwanda combined | Kigali | Natural hub for both countries |
| Murchison Falls, Ziwa Rhinos, Kidepo | Entebbe | Much closer to northern parks |
| Full Uganda circuit (10+ days) | Open-jaw (Kigali in, Entebbe out, or the reverse) | See everything without retracing your route |
An open-jaw tour starts in one city and ends in another. For example, you could fly into Kigali, trek gorillas, travel north through Queen Elizabeth and Kibale, finish at Murchison Falls and fly home from Entebbe. Most international airlines allow this kind of multi-city ticket at little or no extra cost.
| Destination | Approximate drive from Kigali |
|---|---|
| Cyanika border | About 2.5 – 3 hours |
| Kisoro and Mgahinga | About 3.5 hours |
| Bwindi (Rushaga and Nkuringo) | About 4 – 4.5 hours |
| Lake Bunyonyi | About 3 hours |
| Bwindi (Buhoma) | About 6 – 7 hours |
| Queen Elizabeth National Park | About 7 – 8 hours |
| Kibale Forest National Park | About 9 hours |
Times vary with weather, road works and border queues. On longer itineraries, we break journeys with overnight stops and activities so you never spend a full day just driving.
Many travellers worry that crossing between two countries will be complicated. In reality, it is straightforward when your operator handles the logistics. Here is what happens from the moment you land.
Kigali International Airport is modern, compact and easy to navigate. After landing, you go through Rwandan immigration, where you present your passport and visa (or East Africa Tourist Visa), and collect your luggage.
Remember that Rwanda has a strict ban on single-use plastic bags. Pack your items in reusable or cloth bags to avoid problems at customs.
As you exit the arrivals hall, your Pick and Transfer Safaris driver-guide is waiting with a sign showing your name. They help with your luggage and introduce you to your private 4×4 safari vehicle, which will be your home on wheels for the whole tour.
If you arrive in the evening or at night, as many international flights do, we transfer you to a Kigali hotel for the night. If you land in the morning, you can head straight for Uganda.
We recommend one night in Kigali if your flight arrives late. It gives you time to rest, adjust to the time zone and buy a local SIM card. With a spare morning or afternoon, you can explore Kigali City, including the Kigali Genocide Memorial, Kimironko Market, Inema Arts Center and the city’s excellent coffee shops.
After breakfast, you set off northwest through Rwanda. The road is paved and in good condition. Along the way, your guide shares stories about Rwanda’s history, culture and agriculture. You pass through Musanze, the gateway to Volcanoes National Park, with the Virunga Volcanoes rising ahead of you.
The most common crossing for gorilla tours is the Cyanika border, near Kisoro. For Lake Bunyonyi and some Bwindi sectors, we use the Gatuna/Katuna border near Kabale. For routes towards Lake Mburo and Mbarara, the Kagitumba/Mirama Hills border is used.
At the border, the process is simple:
The whole process usually takes 30 minutes to an hour. Your guide accompanies you and helps with any forms. Remember to set your watch one hour ahead, and notice that traffic now drives on the left.
Within minutes of crossing at Cyanika, you reach Kisoro, a lively mountain town with views of the volcanoes. From here, it is a short drive to Mgahinga, about an hour to Bwindi’s southern sectors, or a scenic drive to Lake Bunyonyi. Your Uganda adventure has officially begun.
If you are trekking in Mgahinga or southern Bwindi, our own Ikoro Hotel in Kisoro, opposite Nyakabande Airstrip, is a comfortable and convenient place to stay.
At the end of your tour, your driver-guide brings you back across the border to Kigali, either to a hotel or directly to the airport for your flight home. We plan the timing carefully so you reach the airport with plenty of time to spare. For evening flights, you can often trek or enjoy an activity in the morning and still make your flight comfortably.
No. Our vehicles have the cross-border permits and insurance needed to operate in both Rwanda and Uganda, and our driver-guides are experienced in both countries. You keep the same vehicle and guide for your entire tour, which means no luggage transfers, no waiting and a guide who gets to know your interests from day one.
If you prefer to drive yourself, cross-border self-drive is also possible with the right paperwork. Kenlink Tours provides 4×4 car hire with or without a driver for travellers who want independence.
To show how a Kigali start works in practice, here are three sample itineraries of different lengths.
Sample 1: 2-day gorilla tour (Kigali – Bwindi – Kigali)
Our 2 Days Uganda Gorilla Tour Starting from Kigali follows this plan, from USD 1,200 per person. Kenlink Tours runs a similar 2 Days Uganda Gorilla Safari Starting from Kigali.
Sample 2: 4-day gorillas and lakes (Kigali – Kisoro – Lake Bunyonyi – Kigali)
For a similar format, see Kenlink Tours’ 4-Day Rwanda-Uganda Golden Monkey and Gorilla Trekking.
Sample 3: 7-day primates and wildlife (Kigali – Bwindi – Queen Elizabeth – Kibale – Entebbe)
Our 5 Days Uganda Gorilla and Chimps Safari Starting from Rwanda is a shorter version of this route, and Kenlink Tours’ 5-Day Gorilla Trekking Safari from Kigali to Uganda is another option.
At Pick and Transfer Safaris, these trips are all designed to start in Kigali:
Kenlink Tours also offers several Kigali-based trips, including the 3 Days Bwindi Gorilla Safari Starting from Kigali, the 5 Days Uganda Rwanda Double Gorilla Safari, the 9 Days Uganda and Rwanda Gorilla and Big Five Safari and the 15-Day Rwanda–Uganda Primate and Big-Five Safari Adventure.
Since you enter Rwanda first and then Uganda, you need permission to enter both countries.
| Visa option | Cost | Covers | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| East Africa Tourist Visa | USD 100 | Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya, multiple entries, 90 days | Most cross-border tours |
| Rwanda visa + Uganda e-visa | Varies by nationality (Uganda e-visa USD 50) | One country each | Travellers eligible for visa-free Rwanda entry |
Apply online before you travel. If you use the East Africa Tourist Visa, apply through the country you will enter first, which is Rwanda for tours starting in Kigali. A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required to enter Uganda, and your passport should be valid for at least six months. Visa rules can change, so always check official government websites before travel.
Costs depend on trip length, accommodation level, group size and season. As a guide, here are typical starting prices per person for two people sharing, including permits:
| Tour | Starting price per person |
|---|---|
| 1 day gorilla safari | From about USD 1,000 |
| 2 days gorilla tour | From USD 1,200 |
| 3 days gorilla safari | From about USD 1,400 |
| 5 days gorillas and chimps | From about USD 2,200 |
| 7 days Uganda and Rwanda | From about USD 2,800 |
The gorilla permit is the largest single cost: USD 800 per person in Uganda for foreign non-residents, or around USD 600 during the discounted months of April, May and November. Prices usually include permits, park fees, private transport, a driver-guide, accommodation and meals. Flights, visas, insurance, tips and drinks are extra.

Starting Uganda tours in Kigali is not something we do occasionally. It is the reason our company exists. We saw how many travellers lost days driving from Entebbe to the gorilla parks and built our safaris around a better route.

Is it legal to start a Uganda safari in Rwanda? Yes. Cross-border tourism between Rwanda and Uganda is common and fully legal. Licensed operators run these tours every day.
How long does the border crossing take? Usually 30 minutes to an hour, depending on queues. Your guide helps with all formalities.
Can I start in Kigali and finish in Entebbe? Yes. This open-jaw option is popular for longer tours that include Kibale, Queen Elizabeth or Murchison Falls.
Do I need a separate Ugandan tour company once I cross? No. Pick and Transfer Safaris manages your entire tour in both countries, from airport pick-up to drop-off.
Can I trek gorillas in Uganda on the same day I land in Kigali? Not usually. Gorilla treks start at around 7:00 to 8:00 am, so you need to be near the park the night before. If you land early, you can drive to the park on day one and trek on day two.
Is it cheaper to start in Kigali or Entebbe? For gorilla-focused trips, Kigali is usually cheaper because the drive is much shorter, saving accommodation and transport costs. For northern Uganda trips, Entebbe is more economical.
What if my flight to Kigali is delayed? We track your flight and adjust your pick-up time. If a delay affects your gorilla trekking date, we will do our best to help, but permits are strict, so we build buffer time into tight itineraries where possible.
Can I start my Uganda tour from Kigali by bus? Public buses run between Kigali and Kampala, but they are not convenient for reaching the gorilla parks. A private safari vehicle is far more practical and comfortable.
Yes, and if gorillas are part of your plan, it is very likely the best way to go. You save hours of driving, enjoy Uganda’s lower permit prices, arrive in one of Africa’s safest capitals and can easily add Rwanda’s highlights to your journey.
