5 Days Luxury Uganda safari from Kigali combines the raw thrill of meeting mountain gorillas with the comfort of Africa’s finest forest lodges. In five unhurried days, you travel from Kigali into the misty highlands of southwestern Uganda, trek mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, track rare golden monkeys among the bamboo of the Virunga Volcanoes, and unwind on the island-dotted shores of Lake Mutanda and Lake Bunyonyi before returning to Kigali.
This is a safari for travellers who want the very best of everything: a private 4×4 with an expert guide, handpicked luxury lodges with breathtaking views, gourmet meals, spa treatments after the trek and every detail arranged for you. You focus on the experience. We take care of the rest.
At Pick and Transfer Safaris, we are based in Kisoro, right between Bwindi and Mgahinga and minutes from the Rwanda border. While we are known for affordable safaris, we also design premium journeys for travellers who want luxury without compromise. This guide covers the full itinerary, the lodges, permits, prices, the best time to travel and how to book.
Luxury on safari is not just about expensive hotels. It is about comfort, time, privacy and exceptional service at every step. On our 5 days luxury Uganda safari from Kigali, that means:
If you prefer a more budget-friendly version of a similar trip, our 5 Days Uganda Gorilla and Chimps Safari Starting from Rwanda offers excellent value. For an outside comparison, Kenlink Tours runs a 5-Day Gorilla Trekking Safari from Kigali to Uganda.
This safari is ideal for:
You need a moderate level of fitness for the gorilla and golden monkey treks. Everything else on this itinerary is designed to be relaxing.
Shorter, more comfortable journeys. Kigali International Airport is only about four hours by road from Bwindi’s southern sectors and three and a half hours from Mgahinga. From Entebbe, the same journey takes nine to ten hours. On a luxury safari, less time in the vehicle means more time enjoying your lodge.
A world-class arrival city. Kigali is clean, safe and sophisticated, with excellent international hotels, fine restaurants and boutique coffee shops. Many travellers spend their first night in a luxury Kigali hotel to recover from the flight.
Excellent flight connections. RwandAir and several major international airlines connect Kigali with Europe, the Middle East, Asia and across Africa, often in business class.
Uganda’s gorilla permits offer great value. A Uganda gorilla permit costs USD 800 for foreign non-residents, compared with USD 1,500 in Rwanda. That saving can go towards an upgraded lodge suite or the gorilla habituation experience.
Easy luxury extensions. From Kigali, you can extend your trip with a luxury stay near Volcanoes National Park, a boat safari in Akagera National Park or a beach escape in Zanzibar.
Many luxury travellers could do a one- or two-day gorilla trip from Kigali. So why five days?
| Day | Route | Highlights | Overnight |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Kigali – Cyanika border – Bwindi (Nkuringo or Rushaga) | Scenic drive past the Virunga Volcanoes, sunset at the lodge | Luxury lodge, southern Bwindi |
| 2 | Bwindi Impenetrable Forest | Mountain gorilla trekking, afternoon spa or Batwa visit | Luxury lodge, southern Bwindi |
| 3 | Bwindi – Mgahinga – Lake Mutanda | Golden monkey tracking, lakeside relaxation | Luxury lodge, Lake Mutanda |
| 4 | Lake Mutanda – Lake Bunyonyi | Canoe trip, island visits, birding | Luxury lodge, Lake Bunyonyi |
| 5 | Lake Bunyonyi – Katuna border – Kigali | Leisurely breakfast, return to Kigali | End of safari |
The parks on this route are Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, two of the most important mountain gorilla habitats on earth. For more background, the Kenlink Tours Uganda guide gives a helpful overview.
Your 5 days luxury Uganda safari from Kigali begins with a private meet-and-greet at Kigali International Airport or your Kigali hotel. Your senior driver-guide welcomes you with chilled towels and water, briefs you on the journey ahead and settles you into your private 4×4 Land Cruiser.
The drive northwest through Rwanda is a spectacular introduction to the region. Terraced hillsides, eucalyptus forests and tea estates roll past your window, and near Musanze the great chain of Virunga Volcanoes rises on the horizon. Your guide shares stories about Rwanda’s history, culture and remarkable recovery along the way.
At the Cyanika border, your guide handles the paperwork and walks you through Rwandan exit and Ugandan entry formalities, which usually take less than an hour. Once in Uganda, you pass through Kisoro and climb into the hills to the southern sector of Bwindi, with sweeping views of Lake Mutanda and the volcanoes.
You arrive at your luxury lodge in the early afternoon in time for a late lunch. Lodges in Bwindi’s Nkuringo and Rushaga sectors sit on ridges with jaw-dropping views over the forest and the Virunga chain. Spend the afternoon relaxing on your private veranda, enjoying a massage or taking a short guided nature walk. In the evening, enjoy a gourmet dinner by the fire as the forest comes alive with night sounds.
Meals: Lunch, Dinner | Drive time: About 4 – 4.5 hours
Today is the heart of your luxury safari. After an early breakfast served at your preferred time, your guide drives you a short distance to the sector headquarters for the 7:30 am ranger briefing. Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers explain the trekking rules and assign groups of up to eight visitors to a habituated gorilla family.
Your lodge prepares a gourmet packed lunch, and we arrange a personal porter to carry your daypack and help you on steep sections. Walking sticks are provided. The trek can take from one to several hours, winding through dense forest, across streams and up steep slopes. Advance trackers locate the gorillas early in the morning and guide your ranger by radio.
When you find the family, everything else fades away. For one unforgettable hour, you watch the massive silverback feeding calmly, mothers cradling tiny infants and playful juveniles tumbling through the vegetation, often only a few metres away. It is one of the most profound wildlife encounters on the planet.
After the trek, receive your gorilla trekking certificate and return to your lodge. Many luxury lodges offer a complimentary foot massage or boot cleaning service after the trek. Spend the afternoon at the spa, relaxing by the fire or joining an optional Batwa cultural experience to learn about the forest people of Bwindi.
For travellers who want more gorilla time, the Gorilla Habituation Experience in Rushaga offers up to four hours with a gorilla family that is still being habituated. We can arrange it instead of the standard trek.
Meals: Breakfast, Packed lunch, Dinner | Activity: Gorilla trekking
After an early breakfast, drive to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park at the foot of the Virunga Volcanoes. Mgahinga is Uganda’s smallest national park, but its setting is spectacular, with Mount Muhabura, Mount Gahinga and Mount Sabyinyo towering above.
Join the rangers for golden monkey tracking in the bamboo forest. Golden monkeys are endangered primates found only in the Virunga region. Their bright orange-gold fur and lively, playful behaviour make them a delight to watch and photograph as they leap through the bamboo stems. The walk is generally gentler than gorilla trekking, and you spend one hour with the troop once you find them.
After the activity, transfer to a luxury lodge on the shores of Lake Mutanda, one of Uganda’s most photogenic lakes, with small forested islands and the volcanoes rising behind. Spend the afternoon relaxing, taking a guided canoe trip on the calm water or simply enjoying the view from your cottage with a glass of wine as the sun sets behind the Virunga peaks.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Activity: Golden monkey tracking | Drive time: About 1.5 – 2 hours in total
Enjoy a leisurely breakfast before a short scenic drive to Lake Bunyonyi, often described as one of the most beautiful lakes in Africa. Surrounded by terraced hills and dotted with 29 islands, Lake Bunyonyi is peaceful, cool and free of crocodiles and hippos.
Check in at your luxury lakeside or island lodge, some of which can only be reached by boat. After lunch, take a private boat or canoe tour around the islands. Visit Punishment Island and Akampene, hear local legends from your guide, and watch for otters, crowned cranes, kingfishers and fish eagles. You can also swim in the lake, take a guided nature walk, or simply relax with a book on your private deck.
In the evening, enjoy a farewell dinner overlooking the lake as the lights of fishing canoes twinkle on the water.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Drive time: About 2 – 2.5 hours
Wake up to mist rising over the lake. After a relaxed breakfast, perhaps followed by a sunrise canoe ride or a short walk to a viewpoint, your guide drives you to the nearby Katuna border. After a smooth crossing back into Rwanda, you continue to Kigali, about three hours in total.
On arrival, your guide drops you at Kigali International Airport for your flight home, or at your hotel if you are extending your stay. With extra time, explore Kigali City with a private city tour, or add a luxury extension in Rwanda.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch | Drive time: About 3 hours | End of safari
The lodges you stay in are a big part of a luxury safari. We personally know every property we recommend and choose them for their location, views, service and food. Below are examples of the kinds of lodges we use, always subject to availability on your dates.
| Location | Example luxury lodges | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Kigali (optional pre-safari night) | Kigali Marriott Hotel, Kigali Serena Hotel | International five-star comfort, pools, fine dining |
| Bwindi, Nkuringo sector | Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge | Stone cottages with fireplaces, butler service, views over the Virungas |
| Bwindi, Rushaga sector | Gorilla Safari Lodge | Elegant cottages close to the trailhead, spa services |
| Lake Mutanda / Kisoro | Chameleon Hill Lodge, Mount Gahinga Lodge | Colourful cottages overlooking the lake, or stylish bandas at the foot of the volcanoes |
| Lake Bunyonyi | Birdnest Resort, Arcadia Cottages | Lakeside or hilltop suites with spectacular views and boat access |
We can also mix luxury and premium mid-range lodges to balance cost and comfort. Our own Ikoro Hotel in Kisoro, opposite Nyakabande Airstrip, offers comfortable rooms and warm hospitality for travellers who want a quality stay at a more modest price.
Two permits are needed for this safari, both issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and booked through a licensed operator.
| Permit | Foreign non-resident | Time with primates |
|---|---|---|
| Gorilla trekking, Bwindi | USD 800 (about USD 600 in April, May and November) | 1 hour |
| Gorilla habituation, Rushaga (optional upgrade) | USD 1,500 (USD 1,800 from 1 Jan 2027) | Up to 4 hours |
| Golden monkey tracking, Mgahinga | Confirm current rate with us | 1 hour |
Since 1 March 2026, UWA only reserves permits with proof of full payment. Gorilla permits sell out months in advance during peak season, so we recommend booking four to six months ahead. Prices can change, so we always confirm the latest rates before you pay.
The price depends on your chosen lodges, the season and the size of your group. As a guide, here is what a person sharing with one other traveller can expect to pay, including permits:
| Comfort level | Estimated price per person (2 people) | Lodge style |
|---|---|---|
| Premium | From about USD 3,800 | Upmarket lodges with excellent views and service |
| Luxury | From about USD 5,500 | Top lodges in Bwindi and on the lakes |
| Ultra-luxury | USD 8,000 and above | The most exclusive lodges, butler service, habituation upgrade |
These are guide prices. We will send you an exact quote based on your dates and lodge preferences. Travelling in the April, May or November low season can reduce permit costs, and some lodges offer seasonal rates.

Gorilla trekking runs all year, so you can enjoy this luxury safari in any month.
Dry seasons (June to September and December to February): The most popular months, with firmer trails and clearer skies for volcano views. Luxury lodges book up early, so reserve well in advance.
Wet seasons (March to May and October to November): The forest is at its greenest, there are fewer visitors and some lodges offer seasonal rates. Discounted gorilla permits in April, May and November can make a luxury trip more affordable. Rain usually falls in short bursts, often in the afternoon.
The highlands are cool all year, so luxury lodges provide fireplaces, hot water bottles and warm blankets.
Soft-sided luggage is best for safari vehicles, and you can leave larger bags at your Kigali hotel. Remember that Rwanda bans single-use plastic bags.
Every luxury safari we design is private and fully customisable. Here are some of the most popular ways to enhance your 5 days luxury Uganda safari from Kigali:

Is a luxury gorilla safari worth the extra cost? The gorilla trek is the same experience at every price level, but luxury lodges transform the rest of your stay. After a demanding trek, returning to a spacious suite, a hot bath, a massage and a gourmet dinner makes the whole trip far more enjoyable.
How difficult is the gorilla trek? Treks can last from one to several hours on steep, muddy terrain. A moderate level of fitness is enough. Your personal porter and walking stick make a big difference, and rangers try to match trekkers with suitable gorilla families.
Can I fly instead of driving? The drive from Kigali is relatively short and very scenic, so most luxury travellers prefer it. Private helicopter charters can be arranged on request for a premium.
Are the luxury lodges child-friendly? Most lodges welcome families, though some have minimum age policies. The minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15. We will recommend suitable lodges if you are travelling with children.
What is the minimum age for golden monkey tracking? Golden monkey tracking is open to younger visitors than gorilla trekking. Contact us to confirm the current age policy for your travel dates.
Can this safari be done in reverse? Yes. We can start at Lake Bunyonyi and finish with the gorillas, depending on permit and lodge availability.
How far ahead should I book a luxury safari? We recommend six to nine months in advance for peak season, as both gorilla permits and top lodges sell out early. For low season, three to four months is often enough.
A 5 days luxury Uganda safari from Kigali offers the perfect blend of adventure and indulgence. You will trek mountain gorillas in the ancient Bwindi forest, track golden monkeys beneath the Virunga Volcanoes, and relax in some of East Africa’s most beautiful lodges on the shores of Lake Mutanda and Lake Bunyonyi, all with a private guide and seamless logistics from Kigali and back.
Luxury lodges and gorilla permits are limited, especially in peak season, so early planning ensures you get your preferred dates and rooms.
