2-Day Gorilla Trekking Safari in Mgahinga from Kigali. A 2-day gorilla trekking safari in Mgahinga from Kigali is the perfect solution for travellers who dream of meeting mountain gorillas but have limited time. In just 48 hours, you travel from Rwanda’s capital across the Cyanika border into Uganda, spend a night at the foot of the Virunga volcanoes, trek the Nyakagezi gorilla family in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and return to Kigali with memories that last a lifetime.
Short does not have to mean rushed. Unlike a one-day trip, which requires a middle-of-the-night departure, a two-day safari lets you travel in daylight, enjoy the scenery, sleep well in Kisoro and arrive at the trailhead refreshed. It is the most popular short gorilla trip we run, and for good reason: it balances time, comfort and value beautifully.
At Pick and Transfer Safaris, our team is based in Kisoro, just minutes from Mgahinga. In this guide, we share the complete 2-day itinerary, costs, permit tips, accommodation options and everything you need to plan your gorilla trekking safari from Kigali with confidence.
Kigali is the closest international gateway to Uganda’s Virunga volcanoes. The drive from Kigali to Kisoro takes about four to five hours via the Cyanika border, while the same region is nine to eleven hours from Entebbe. That geography makes a two-day trip not only possible but genuinely comfortable. It is the idea behind all our Uganda gorilla safaris starting from Kigali.
Key benefits of this itinerary:
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is Uganda’s smallest national park, covering about 33.7 square kilometres in Kisoro District. It forms the Ugandan part of the Virunga Conservation Area, shared with Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park and Congo’s Virunga National Park.
Three extinct volcanoes, Muhavura (about 4,127 m), Gahinga (about 3,474 m) and Sabyinyo (about 3,669 m), dominate the park. Their slopes are covered in bamboo, montane forest and alpine vegetation that provide food for mountain gorillas and golden monkeys. The park’s motto, “where silver meets gold”, celebrates these two remarkable primates.
Mgahinga has one habituated gorilla family open to visitors: the Nyakagezi group. This family is famous for its unusually high number of silverbacks living together peacefully, a sign of a calm and stable group. It also includes adult females, blackbacks, juveniles and playful infants.
In earlier years, Nyakagezi sometimes wandered across the border into Rwanda or Congo. Since the early 2010s, however, the group has settled within Mgahinga, making daily treks reliable. Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) trackers monitor the family every day, so by the time you begin your trek, the team already knows roughly where the gorillas spent the night.
| Trip length | Pros | Cons | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 day | Fastest option, no overnight | 2:00–3:00 am start, very long day | Travellers with no spare night |
| 2 days | Relaxed travel, well rested for trek | Little time for extra activities | Most short-stay visitors |
| 3 days | Adds golden monkeys or culture | Needs an extra day | Primate and culture lovers |
If you truly have only one day, see our one-day Uganda gorilla safari starting from Kigali. If you can spare a third day, our 3 days Uganda gorilla safari from Rwanda adds golden monkeys or the Batwa Trail. For most travellers, though, two days is the sweet spot. Other operators such as Kenlink Tours offer similar short programmes, including their 2 days Uganda gorilla safari starting from Kigali.
Your 2-day gorilla trekking safari in Mgahinga from Kigali begins with a morning pick-up from your hotel or Kigali International Airport, usually between 7:00 and 9:00 am. Your professional driver-guide welcomes you, checks your passport, visa and yellow fever certificate, and settles you into a comfortable 4×4 safari vehicle.
If you arrive in Rwanda the day before, take a few hours to explore Kigali City. The Kigali Genocide Memorial offers a moving insight into Rwanda’s history, while Kimironko Market, Inema Arts Centre and the city’s cafés show its modern, creative side.
Leaving Kigali, the road winds north-west through green hills, banana plantations and busy roadside villages. Your guide shares stories about Rwandan culture, farming and conservation along the way. After about two hours you reach Musanze, the gateway to Volcanoes National Park, where the Virunga volcanoes suddenly fill the horizon. It is a perfect spot for a coffee and photo stop.
From Musanze, it is a short drive to the Cyanika border. Your guide assists with Rwandan exit formalities and Ugandan entry, where you present your passport, visa and yellow fever certificate. The crossing usually takes 30 to 60 minutes. Remember that Uganda is one hour ahead of Rwanda, so set your watch forward. Once in Uganda, Kisoro town is only about 10 km away.
You arrive at your Kisoro lodge in the early afternoon. After lunch, the rest of the day is yours. Popular options include:
In the evening, your guide briefs you on the gorilla trek, checks your packing and answers any questions. Enjoy dinner and an early night.
Overnight: Kisoro | Meals: Lunch, dinner | Driving: about 4–5 hours including the border
Today is the highlight of your safari. After an early breakfast at around 6:00 am, you collect your packed lunch and drive 30 to 45 minutes to Ntebeko gate, the starting point for gorilla trekking in Mgahinga. The road climbs toward the volcanoes, and on clear mornings the peaks glow in the early light.
7:30 am – Briefing. At the park headquarters, UWA rangers check permits and passports and gather your group of up to eight trekkers. You learn about the Nyakagezi family, gorilla behaviour and the rules that protect both visitors and gorillas. Porters are available to hire at the gate.
8:00 am – The trek begins. Led by an experienced ranger guide and armed escorts, you walk across old farmland at the park edge and into bamboo and montane forest. Advance trackers radio your guide with the gorillas’ location. The trek can take anywhere from one to five hours each way, depending on where the family is feeding.
The magical hour. When you reach the gorillas, you leave your bags with the porters and move quietly closer with your camera. For one hour, you watch the family feed, rest, groom and play. You might see a silverback calmly stripping bamboo, a mother cradling her infant or youngsters wrestling in the undergrowth. It is a deeply moving experience that words can hardly capture.
Return and certificate. After your hour, you hike back to Ntebeko gate and receive your gorilla trekking certificate. Enjoy your packed lunch, freshen up and begin the drive back to Kigali via Cyanika. You arrive in Kigali in the evening, with drop-off at your hotel or the airport.
Meals: Breakfast, packed lunch | Activity: gorilla trekking (2–8 hours) | Driving: about 4–5 hours
Because trek length varies, we recommend not booking a flight out of Kigali on the evening of Day 2. Gorilla treks can sometimes run long, and the drive back including the border takes four to five hours. The safest plan is to stay one more night in Kigali and fly the following day. If you must fly on Day 2, choose a late-night departure and discuss timing with us in advance.
Similarly, if you arrive on a late flight, consider spending your first night in Kigali before starting the safari the next morning. That way you travel in daylight and enjoy the stunning scenery.
Even on a short trip, you can enrich your experience with a few extras:
Any of these can turn your two days into three or four without much extra travel.
Typically included:
Not included:
Ask your operator for a written list of inclusions before paying so you know exactly what you are getting.
The largest single cost is the gorilla permit, set by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Current standard rates are:
| Visitor category | Gorilla permit (per person) |
|---|---|
| Foreign non-residents | US$800 |
| Foreign residents in Uganda | US$700 |
| Rest of Africa | US$500 |
| East African citizens | UGX 300,000 |
UWA reviews tariffs periodically and has offered seasonal promotions in some low-season months, so always confirm the latest permit price when booking.
As a guide, a full 2-day gorilla trekking safari in Mgahinga from Kigali typically costs:
Because transport is priced per vehicle, solo travellers pay more, while groups of three or four save significantly. Compared with a Rwanda gorilla trip, where the permit alone costs US$1,500, this itinerary offers excellent value. For an itemised quote, contact our team.
With only about eight permits per day for its single habituated family, Mgahinga sells out quickly, especially from June to September and December to February. We recommend booking three to six months ahead for peak season and at least one to two months ahead at other times. Recent UWA rules require full payment at the time of booking, and standby permits are no longer sold.
To book, send us:
We check availability, secure the permit with UWA and send you a copy. If Mgahinga is full on your dates, we can usually find permits in the Rushaga or Nkuringo sectors of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, both reachable within the same two-day format.
Gorilla trekking in Mgahinga runs year-round, and the Nyakagezi family is found on almost every trek.
The highlands are cool all year, with chilly mornings and evenings and showers possible in any month. Pack a rain jacket and warm layers whatever the season.
This safari takes you from Rwanda into Uganda and back, so you need to enter Rwanda twice and Uganda once.
At Cyanika, you receive a Rwandan exit stamp, walk or drive the short stretch to the Ugandan side and complete entry formalities. Your guide assists throughout. For a deeper look at the route, read our companion guide on travelling from Kigali to Mgahinga, or browse more ideas on Kenlink Tours’ Rwanda safaris page.
Mgahinga’s trails lie at between about 2,200 and 4,100 metres and can be steep, muddy and slippery. You do not need to be an athlete, but moderate fitness helps. Walking regularly and climbing stairs in the weeks before your trip will make the trek more enjoyable. Hiring a porter is highly recommended; they carry your bag, help you on steep sections and earn valuable income for their families.
The minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15. Visitors with colds, flu or other contagious illnesses will not be allowed to trek, because gorillas are highly vulnerable to human diseases.
Rwanda bans single-use plastic bags, so pack your belongings in reusable bags.
Your single night in Kisoro sets the tone for trek day, so choose a lodge that suits your style and budget.
Whichever you choose, a good night’s sleep is the secret to enjoying your trek.
Once travellers experience the Virungas, many wish they had more time. The good news is that this itinerary is easy to extend:

Mountain gorillas remain endangered, and responsible tourism is one of the strongest tools protecting them. You can add to your positive impact by hiring a porter, buying crafts directly from local artisans, following trekking rules carefully and choosing locally owned operators and lodges. Each responsible visit helps secure a future for the gorillas and the people who live alongside them.
