Christimas Holiday Safaris in Uganda. Imagine waking up on Christmas morning not to wrapping paper and traffic, but to the call of a fish eagle over a quiet lake. Instead of another turkey in front of the television, you spend the day watching elephants cross the savannah, cruising past hippos on the Kazinga Channel or sitting in silent wonder beside a family of mountain gorillas. That is what a Christmas holiday safari in Uganda can offer.
December is one of the best months of the year to visit Uganda. The dry season is starting, forest trails are firming up, wildlife is easy to spot and the countryside is still green from the short rains. Ugandans celebrate Christmas with warmth, music, church services and family feasts, and many safari lodges put on special festive dinners for their guests.
Whether you are a family looking for a holiday the children will never forget, a couple seeking a romantic escape, friends wanting adventure, or a Ugandan or expatriate resident planning a festive getaway, this guide covers everything you need:
At Pick and Transfer Safaris, we believe unforgettable holidays should be affordable. Our team is based in Kisoro, between Bwindi and Mgahinga, and we plan festive safaris every year for travellers from around the world and from right here in East Africa.
Important: Christmas and New Year are among the busiest weeks of the year for gorilla permits and popular lodges. If you are planning a Christmas 2026 safari, now is the time to book.
December marks the start of Uganda’s main dry season, which runs into February. Rain becomes less frequent, roads and trails dry out, and animals gather near rivers and lakes. It is one of the best times of the year for gorilla trekking, chimp tracking and game drives.
For travellers from Europe and North America, Uganda offers warm, sunny days at Christmas, with temperatures of around 24–28°C in the savannah parks. For residents of Kampala, a festive safari is a chance to leave the city’s Christmas traffic behind and enjoy peace, fresh air and nature.
Few Christmas presents compare with an hour beside a family of wild mountain gorillas. Many families tell us it was the most meaningful holiday they ever shared, and children (aged 15+ for gorillas) remember it forever.
Uganda is a deeply welcoming country where Christmas is a major celebration. Expect carols, church choirs, colourful decorations and festive meals. Lodges often decorate their dining areas, serve special Christmas dinners and host bonfires or music under the stars.
One trip can include gorillas, chimpanzees, tree-climbing lions, boat cruises, waterfalls, rhinos and crater lakes — enough variety to keep every member of the family excited throughout the holidays.
International visitors can fly into Entebbe or Kigali. Starting in Kigali puts you just three to four hours from Uganda’s gorilla parks — a smart choice during the busy holiday period when time is precious.
For a broader introduction to the country, see the About Uganda guide from Kenlink Tours.
Uganda sits on the equator, so temperatures stay pleasant all year. December is a transition month: the short rains of October and November are ending, and the long dry season is beginning. Early December may still bring the occasional afternoon shower, but by Christmas most days are bright and sunny. January and February are usually the driest months.
| Area | Typical December daytime temperature | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Murchison Falls and Queen Elizabeth | 25–30°C | Warm, sunny savannah days |
| Lake Mburo | 24–28°C | Pleasant for walking safaris |
| Kibale | 20–26°C | Cooler forest with occasional showers |
| Bwindi and Mgahinga | 15–23°C | Cool, misty mornings; chilly nights |
| Lake Bunyonyi | 15–24°C | Fresh highland climate |
Because Bwindi and Mgahinga are mountain rainforests, rain is possible on any day, so always pack a rain jacket and warm layers.
The festive season is peak time for both international visitors and residents. Gorilla permits, popular lodges and domestic flights can sell out months in advance. Planning and booking early is essential.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is home to nearly half of the world’s mountain gorillas. Trekking through its misty forest to spend an hour with a gorilla family is the ultimate festive experience. Lodges here are cosy, with fireplaces for the cool evenings — perfect for Christmas. Our 3 Days Uganda Gorilla Safari and Kenlink Tours’ 3-Day Uganda Gorillas Safari fit neatly into a short holiday.
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park sits on the Virunga volcanoes, close to the Rwandan border. It offers gorilla trekking, golden monkey tracking and volcano hikes — and it is the quickest Ugandan gorilla park to reach from Kigali.
Queen Elizabeth National Park is a festive favourite for families. Search for lions on the Kasenyi plains, spot tree-climbing lions in Ishasha and cruise the Kazinga Channel among hippos and elephants. Kenlink Tours’ 3 Days Queen Elizabeth National Park safari is a great short option.
Kibale Forest National Park offers Uganda’s best chimpanzee tracking, plus crater lakes and tea plantations near Fort Portal — a beautiful setting for a festive break.
Murchison Falls National Park combines spectacular waterfalls, the Nile launch cruise and excellent game drives with giraffes, elephants and lions. Add Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary on the way for rhino tracking on foot. Our 3 Days Safari to Murchison Falls works well over a long holiday weekend.
Just four hours from Kampala, Lake Mburo is ideal for a short Christmas or New Year break, with zebras, impala, walking and horseback safaris and boat cruises.
With its 29 islands and terraced hills, Lake Bunyonyi is a magical place to relax after gorilla trekking and welcome the New Year with friends or family.
If you start in Kigali, enjoy the city’s festive atmosphere — see our Kigali City guide — or add Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park for golden monkeys.
These sample itineraries are built around the 2026 festive season. All can be adjusted to your dates, budget and group.
Perfect for residents of Kampala or Entebbe.
Prefer something closer? Swap Murchison for Lake Mburo and enjoy a Christmas Day horseback or walking safari among zebras.

Spending Christmas in the wild does not mean missing out on festive traditions. In fact, many guests say it is the most memorable Christmas they have ever had.
Most safari lodges in Uganda host a special Christmas Eve or Christmas Day dinner. Expect decorations, candlelight and a festive menu that often combines international favourites with Ugandan dishes such as luwombo (stew steamed in banana leaves), roasted goat or chicken, matoke and fresh tropical fruit. Some lodges organise bonfires, live music or traditional dance performances.
Tip: Some lodges include a compulsory festive dinner supplement in their Christmas rates. We will tell you about any extra charges when we quote.
Christmas is a major celebration in Uganda, and church services are joyful and full of music. Your guide can arrange a visit to a local village church on Christmas morning — a moving cultural experience that many travellers treasure. Please dress modestly and ask before taking photos.
If your safari starts or ends in a city, enjoy festive markets, Christmas lights, rooftop restaurants and New Year’s Eve celebrations, including fireworks in Kampala and Kigali.
The festive season is a time of giving. Many travellers choose to visit or support a local community project during their safari. Part of Pick and Transfer Safaris’ profits supports orphaned children through the Kigezi Foundation, and we can arrange a respectful visit if you would like to bring donations of school supplies or clothing.
Pack a few small gifts and Christmas decorations, download favourite holiday movies for downtime, and let children help spot wildlife with their own binoculars and checklists. A Christmas morning game drive or boat cruise quickly becomes a family tradition.
December is not part of Uganda’s low season, so standard permit rates apply. Prices set by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA):
| Permit | Foreign non-resident | Foreign resident | East African citizen |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gorilla trekking (Bwindi, Mgahinga) | US$800 | US$700 | UGX 300,000 |

Note for Christmas-to-New-Year trips: UWA’s new prices for chimp tracking and the gorilla habituation experience take effect on 1 January 2027. If your trip spans the New Year, schedule chimp tracking before 1 January to pay the 2026 rate.
If you are planning a Christmas 2026 safari, contact us as soon as possible so we can check permit availability for your preferred dates.

Festive-season lodge rates are often higher than at other times of year, and some lodges add compulsory Christmas or New Year gala dinner supplements. Residents pay much less thanks to citizen and resident permit rates — ask us for a local quote.
Christmas is the perfect time for a family adventure, but a few rules are worth knowing:
Choose family rooms or interconnecting cottages, plan shorter driving days, and build in pool time and rest afternoons. Our guides are experienced with families and happy to adjust the pace.
Because the festive period is busy, book accommodation as early as possible.
Most Christmas safaris travel in a private 4×4 safari vehicle with an experienced driver-guide. Roads out of Kampala can be busy in the days before Christmas and after New Year as people travel to their home villages, so we plan early starts and realistic travel times.
Domestic flights from Entebbe to Kihihi, Kisoro, Kasese and Pakuba are a good way to save time, but they book up quickly at Christmas. Alternatively, fly into Kigali for the shortest route to the gorillas — see all our gorilla safaris.
If you are a resident or experienced driver, a self-drive Christmas safari offers total flexibility. Our sister company Self Drive Safaris Uganda provides 4×4 vehicles, camping equipment and route support.
