Can i hire a car from Kigali to go to Uganda for Gorilla Trek. Yes, you can hire a car in Kigali and drive it into Uganda for gorilla trekking, as long as the rental company provides cross-border permission, the right insurance and the vehicle documents for the border. Thousands of travellers do it every year, either driving themselves or hiring a car with a local driver.
The reason is simple geography. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park sit in Uganda’s far southwest, only 4 to 5 hours from Kigali. From Entebbe, the same parks are 9 to 11 hours away. Hiring a car in Kigali puts Uganda’s gorillas within easy reach, with the freedom to travel at your own pace.
But not every Kigali rental car is allowed across the border, and not every traveller is comfortable on Uganda’s mountain roads. In this guide, the team at Pick and Transfer Safaris explains everything you need to know: self-drive versus a car with a driver, the best vehicles, cross-border paperwork, routes, costs, permits, safety and how to choose a reliable car hire company.
Hiring a car in Kigali saves a full day of travel, cuts permit costs compared with trekking in Rwanda, and gives you complete control over your schedule. Here are the main advantages.
Kigali International Airport is the nearest international gateway to Bwindi’s southern sectors and Mgahinga. A morning pickup in Kigali can have you at your lodge near Rushaga or Nkuringo by mid-afternoon. That is why we designed our Uganda gorilla safaris starting from Kigali.
A Uganda gorilla permit is currently USD 800 for foreign non-residents, while a Rwanda permit costs USD 1,500. Fly into Kigali, drive into Uganda, and you save USD 700 per person on the permit alone.
With your own car, you choose when to leave, where to stop and how long to stay. You can pause at viewpoints over the Virunga volcanoes, linger at Lake Bunyonyi, or add a night in Kigali City before or after the trek.
A car hired in Kigali can take you through both countries on one trip. You might track golden monkeys in Volcanoes National Park, trek gorillas in Bwindi, then return for a game drive in Akagera National Park.
Car hire is priced per vehicle, not per person. For a family or group of four, it is often far cheaper than individual seats on a package tour.
Self-drive suits confident, experienced drivers who want total independence, while hiring a car with a driver suits first-time visitors who want local knowledge and a stress-free border crossing. Both are valid choices, and the right one depends on your experience and comfort.
| Factor | Self-drive | Car with driver |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Lower daily rate | Higher, includes driver’s allowance |
| Border crossing | You handle the paperwork | Driver guides you through |
| Road knowledge | You navigate with maps and GPS | Driver knows every route and shortcut |
| Driving side | Switch from right (Rwanda) to left (Uganda) | Not your concern |
| Rest and views | You focus on the road | You relax and enjoy the scenery |
| Privacy and freedom | Complete | High, with local insight |
Self-drive is a good fit if you:
Our sister company, Self Drive Safaris Uganda, specialises in 4×4 self-drive hire with cross-border paperwork for Rwanda and Uganda.
A car with a driver is the better choice if you:
Kenlink Tours offers both options on its car hire page, and many travellers start with a driver, then try self-drive on a later trip once they know the roads.
If you want the car, driver, permit and lodges handled together, a short package is often the best value. Options include our 2 days Uganda gorilla tour starting from Kigali and Kenlink Tours’ 2 days Rwanda to Uganda gorilla trekking safari.
Hire a 4×4 for any trip to Bwindi or Mgahinga; a saloon car can manage the tarmac to Kisoro or Kabale but will struggle on the steep, muddy gravel roads to the trekking sectors. Here are the most common options.
| Vehicle | Seats | Best for | Rooftop tent option |
|---|---|---|---|
| Toyota RAV4 | 4 | Couples and solo self-drivers | Yes, with some companies |
| Toyota Land Cruiser Prado | 4–5 | Comfort on long drives, small families | Yes |
| Toyota Land Cruiser (extended, pop-up roof) | 6–7 | Groups and full safaris with game drives | Sometimes |
| Toyota Hilux / double-cab pickup | 4–5 | Camping trips with lots of gear | Yes |
| Safari van | 7+ | Larger groups on mainly tarmac routes | No |
The RAV4 is the most affordable 4×4 for gorilla trips. It is fuel-efficient and handles the gravel roads to Rushaga and Nkuringo well in the dry season. It is best for two people with light luggage.
The Prado is the most popular choice for gorilla self-drives and chauffeured trips. It has high clearance, a strong engine for steep climbs, and space for four travellers and their bags.
If your trip continues to Queen Elizabeth National Park for game drives, the pop-up roof is a big advantage for wildlife viewing and photography. It is usually hired with a driver-guide.
Some companies offer 4x4s with rooftop tents, cooking kits and camping chairs. This can reduce accommodation costs, though campsites near the gorilla sectors are limited and nights in the highlands are cold.
To drive a Kigali rental car into Uganda, you need written permission from the rental company, the vehicle’s registration and customs documents, and insurance valid in Uganda, usually through the COMESA Yellow Card. Tell the company at the time of booking that you are crossing the border, because not every vehicle or contract allows it.
Road tolls and temporary import fees on the Ugandan side are usually paid at the border. Ask your rental company which costs are included in your quote.
If you hire a car with a driver, the company and driver handle all vehicle paperwork. You only deal with your own passport, visa and health card. This is one of the main reasons first-time visitors choose a chauffeured car. Kenlink Tours’ published terms and conditions are a useful example of how a responsible operator explains its booking rules in writing.
From Kigali, you reach Uganda’s gorilla parks through one of two border posts: Cyanika, via Musanze, for Mgahinga and southern Bwindi; or Gatuna/Katuna, via Gicumbi and Kabale, for eastern and northern Bwindi. Both routes are tarmac to the Ugandan towns, then gravel to the parks.
| Destination | Best border | Approx. drive from Kigali |
|---|---|---|
| Mgahinga Gorilla National Park | Cyanika | 3.5–4 hours |
| Bwindi – Nkuringo | Cyanika | 4.5–5.5 hours |
| Bwindi – Rushaga | Cyanika or Katuna | 4–5 hours |
| Bwindi – Ruhija | Katuna | 5–6 hours |
| Bwindi – Buhoma | Katuna | 7–9 hours |
Times include the border crossing and assume dry weather. Allow extra time in the rainy season.
This is the most scenic drive, winding through Rwanda’s terraced hills to Musanze at the foot of the Virunga volcanoes. The Cyanika border is about 30 minutes beyond Musanze, and Kisoro town is just across the border. From Kisoro, gravel roads climb to Nkuringo and Rushaga, or head a short distance to Mgahinga. Our own Ikoro Hotel, opposite Nyakabande Airstrip near Kisoro, is right on this route.
This is the main highway between Rwanda and Uganda, used by trucks and buses. It is about 1.5 hours from Kigali to the border and 30 minutes on to Kabale. From Kabale, you can head past Lake Bunyonyi to Rushaga or up into the forest to Ruhija and Buhoma.
Smaller border posts keep shorter hours than Katuna, so plan to cross in daylight. Never take photos at border posts.
The biggest change for self-drivers is that Rwanda drives on the right and Uganda drives on the left, so you switch sides the moment you cross the border. Ask whether your car is left-hand or right-hand drive, and take the first few kilometres after the border slowly while you adjust.
The tarmac from Kigali to Kisoro and Kabale is in good condition. The last stretch to each trekking sector is where care is needed. In the rainy months of March to May and October to November, these roads can be muddy and slippery. Use 4WD, drive slowly and avoid sudden braking on downhill slopes.
Fill up in Musanze, Kisoro or Kabale. Fuel stations are scarce near the parks, and small roadside sellers may sell lower-quality fuel. Keep at least half a tank at all times.
Google Maps and Maps.me work well on main roads, but lodge directions near the parks can be less reliable. Download offline maps, and ask your lodge for a landmark-based description of the final approach.
Car hire from Kigali to Uganda is priced per day per vehicle, and the total depends on the vehicle type, whether you hire a driver, the number of days and the cross-border fees. Fuel is usually extra on self-drive hire.
| Typically included | Typically extra |
|---|---|
| The vehicle and basic insurance | Fuel (on self-drive) |
| Unlimited or high daily mileage | Cross-border fees and road tolls |
| 24/7 breakdown support | Gorilla permits and park entry fees |
| Driver’s fee and allowance (if chauffeured) | Rooftop tent or camping gear |
| Spare tyre, jack and safety kit | Reduced-excess insurance |
| Airport or hotel delivery in Kigali | One-way drop-off fee |
Send the company your travel dates, number of travellers, preferred vehicle, whether you want a driver, and your route. Ask for a full written breakdown that shows the cross-border fee, insurance excess and fuel policy. Compare quotes line by line, not just by the headline daily rate.
We price our transfers and hire options fairly for budget and mid-range travellers. Send us your plans through our contact page and we will reply with a clear quote within 24 hours.
Book your gorilla permit first, then your lodge in the same sector, and only then lock in the car hire dates. Permits are the scarcest part of the trip, and everything else should fit around them.
Permits are issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. You can book through a licensed tour operator, which is usually easier when you are driving yourself, as they can check availability across sectors quickly. The permit is booked in your name using your passport details.
Bwindi’s four sectors (Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo) are far apart by road. Stay near the sector on your permit, because the briefing starts at around 7:30 am and driving mountain roads in the dark is not wise. For Mgahinga or Nkuringo, Kisoro is a convenient base.
This matches our guided 3 days Uganda gorilla safari from Rwanda if you prefer a driver.
Kenlink Tours’ 4-day Rwanda-Uganda golden monkey and gorilla trekking follows a similar idea.
Continue north from Bwindi to Queen Elizabeth for game drives and a Kazinga Channel boat cruise, then on to Kibale Forest National Park for chimpanzees. You can end in Entebbe with a one-way drop-off, or loop back to Kigali. For guided versions, see our 10 days Uganda Rwanda safari, our 5 days Uganda gorilla and chimps safari starting from Rwanda, and Kenlink Tours’ 5-day gorilla trekking safari from Kigali to Uganda and 9 days Uganda and Rwanda gorilla and Big Five safari.
Driving from Kigali to Uganda’s gorilla parks is safe for prepared travellers, and the main risks are ordinary road hazards rather than crime. These habits will keep your trip smooth.
On trek day, hire a local porter at the trailhead. It is inexpensive, makes steep climbs much easier and supports families living around the park.
Choose a company that explicitly allows cross-border travel to Uganda, provides all the vehicle documents, and offers 24-hour support on both sides of the border. Many Kigali rental companies only operate within Rwanda, so ask this question first.
If something goes wrong on a gravel road above Rushaga, a company based in Kigali alone may take a full day to reach you. Pick and Transfer Safaris is based in Kisoro, between Bwindi, Mgahinga and the Cyanika border, so help is close at hand. Our sister company, Self Drive Safaris Uganda, handles self-drive rentals, while we arrange cars with drivers and full packages. Learn more about us.
For comparison, Kenlink Tours is another regional operator offering vehicles for Uganda and Rwanda trips; its Rwanda safaris and about Uganda pages give useful background for planning a cross-border route.
No. You need written authorisation from the owner, cross-border insurance and the vehicle’s registration documents. Always confirm cross-border permission when you book, not when you collect the car.
A valid licence in English is generally accepted for short visits, but an International Driving Permit is strongly recommended. It avoids problems at police checkpoints and is required by some rental companies.
It is possible but tiring. You would leave Kigali in the early hours, trek, and drive back late at night. For a single day, we recommend hiring a car with a driver, as on our 1-day Uganda gorilla safari starting from Kigali. Two or three days is far more comfortable. Kenlink Tours offers a 2 days Uganda gorilla safari starting from Kigali and a 3 days Bwindi gorilla safari starting from Kigali for travellers who prefer a set plan.
Yes, many companies allow one-way rentals, but expect a drop-off fee to cover returning the vehicle to Rwanda.
Yes, for any route into Bwindi or Mgahinga. The final roads to the trekking sectors are steep and unpaved, and become slippery after rain.
Yes. With a car from Kigali, you can trek in Volcanoes National Park, then cross to Bwindi or Mgahinga for a second encounter. See our 2 days Volcanoes gorilla trek from Kigali and Kenlink Tours’ 3-day gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park for the Rwanda side.
Stay calm and polite, greet the officer, and show your licence, the car’s documents and insurance. Checkpoints are routine and usually quick.
Yes, many solo travellers self-drive in Rwanda and Uganda. Share your route with your rental company and lodge, travel only in daylight, and keep your phone charged.
So, can you hire a car from Kigali to go to Uganda for gorilla trekking? Absolutely, and for many travellers it is the smartest way to reach Bwindi and Mgahinga. You save a full day of driving compared with Entebbe, pay less for your permit than in Rwanda, and travel on your own schedule.
The keys to success are simple. Choose a company that allows cross-border travel and provides every document. Hire a proper 4×4. Book your permit first and your lodge in the same sector. Drive in daylight, and take your time on the gravel roads. If you are new to East Africa, hire a car with a driver; if you are an experienced driver who loves independence, self-drive can be the adventure of a lifetime.
