3-Day Mgahinga Safari from Kigali. A 3-day Mgahinga safari from Kigali is the perfect short adventure for travellers who want more than a rushed gorilla encounter. In just three days, you travel from Rwanda’s vibrant capital across the border into Uganda, spend an unforgettable hour with the Nyakagezi mountain gorilla family, track the rare golden monkeys and explore the dramatic volcanic landscapes of the Virunga Mountains. It is a compact trip, yet it feels rich, unhurried and deeply rewarding.
Many travellers try to squeeze gorilla trekking into a single day from Kigali. It can be done, but it means leaving in the middle of the night and arriving back exhausted. Three days changes everything. You arrive in Kisoro with time to rest, wake up refreshed for your trek and enjoy a second primate experience or cultural encounter before heading back to Kigali.
At Pick and Transfer Safaris, we are based in Kisoro, just a short drive from Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. This guide explains exactly how our 3-day Mgahinga safari from Kigali works, what each day looks like, what it costs, how to book your permits and how to make the most of your time in this remarkable corner of Africa.
Starting in Kigali is the fastest way to reach Uganda’s Virunga volcanoes. The drive from Kigali to Kisoro takes roughly four to five hours, including the border crossing at Cyanika. From Entebbe, the same journey can take nine to eleven hours. That is why so many of our guests choose our Uganda gorilla safaris starting from Kigali.
A three-day itinerary hits the sweet spot between time and value:
If you only have two days, our 2 days Uganda gorilla tour starting from Kigali is a good alternative. If you have just one, consider the one-day Uganda gorilla safari from Kigali. But for most travellers, three days is the ideal length.
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is Uganda’s smallest national park, covering about 33.7 square kilometres in Kisoro District. It is the Ugandan part of the Virunga Conservation Area, which it shares with Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Three extinct volcanoes define the park. Mount Muhavura rises to about 4,127 metres, Mount Gahinga to around 3,474 metres and Mount Sabyinyo to roughly 3,669 metres. Their slopes hold bamboo forest, montane woodland and alpine vegetation, providing food and shelter for mountain gorillas, golden monkeys, buffaloes, forest elephants and more than 150 bird species.
The park is home to one habituated gorilla family, the Nyakagezi group, famous for having several silverbacks living together peacefully. With only around eight gorilla permits issued each day, Mgahinga offers a quiet, intimate experience that many visitors prefer to the busier sectors of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
Other Ugandan operators, such as Kenlink Tours, also recommend three days as the best balance for a Virunga primate trip, and it is easy to see why once you experience the pace yourself.
Your 3-day Mgahinga safari from Kigali begins with a morning pick-up from your hotel or from Kigali International Airport. Your professional driver-guide will brief you on the trip, check your documents and load your luggage into a comfortable safari vehicle.
If you arrive the day before, it is worth spending a few hours in Kigali City. The Kigali Genocide Memorial, Kimironko Market, the Inema Arts Centre and the city’s many cafés give you a powerful introduction to Rwanda’s history and modern spirit.
Leaving Kigali, the road winds north-west through green terraced hills, banana plantations and busy roadside villages. After about two hours you reach Musanze, where the Virunga volcanoes suddenly rise ahead of you. On a clear day you can see Karisimbi, Bisoke, Sabyinyo, Gahinga and Muhavura lined up along the horizon, a breathtaking sight.
You then continue to the Cyanika border post. Your guide will help you through Rwandan exit formalities and Ugandan immigration, where you present your passport, visa and yellow fever certificate. The crossing usually takes 30 to 60 minutes. From the Ugandan side, Kisoro town is only about 10 km away.
You arrive in Kisoro around lunchtime, check into your lodge and relax. In the afternoon, choose from optional activities:
In the evening, your guide will brief you on the next day’s gorilla trek and help you prepare your gear. Dinner and overnight at your chosen lodge in Kisoro or near the park.
Meals: Lunch, dinner | Driving time: about 4–5 hours including the border
This is the day you have been waiting for. After an early breakfast at around 6:00 am, you collect your packed lunch and drive about 30 to 45 minutes to Ntebeko gate, the starting point for gorilla trekking in Mgahinga. The final stretch is unpaved and climbs toward the volcano slopes, so a 4×4 vehicle is essential.
At 7:30 am, Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers check your permit and passport, then give a detailed briefing on the Nyakagezi family, gorilla behaviour and trekking rules. Groups of up to eight visitors set off with an experienced ranger guide and armed escorts. You can hire a local porter at the gate to carry your bag and help on steep sections.
The trek begins across the old farmland at the park boundary before entering bamboo and montane forest. Advance trackers, who left at dawn, radio your guide with the gorillas’ position. Depending on where the family is feeding, the hike can take from one to five hours each way, crossing ridges, gullies and sometimes slippery volcanic soil.
Then comes the moment of a lifetime. As you step into a clearing, you see them: a massive silverback resting in the sun, mothers cradling infants, juveniles tumbling through the vegetation. For one hour, you quietly watch the gorillas feed, groom, play and interact, just metres away. Many travellers describe it as the most emotional wildlife encounter of their lives.
After your hour, you hike back to Ntebeko and receive your gorilla trekking certificate. Return to your lodge to rest, share photos and celebrate over dinner.
Meals: Breakfast, packed lunch, dinner | Activity: gorilla trekking (2–8 hours)
Your final day offers a second unforgettable experience before you head back to Kigali. Choose one of these morning activities:
Golden monkey tracking. Return to Ntebeko early for golden monkey tracking. These endangered monkeys, with their bright orange-gold coats, live in the bamboo zone of the Virungas. The hike is generally gentler than the gorilla trek, and once you find the troop you spend an hour watching them leap and feed in the bamboo. It is a joyful, photogenic experience and a perfect complement to the gorillas, giving Mgahinga its motto “where silver meets gold”.
The Batwa Trail and Garama Cave. Alternatively, join the Batwa Trail, a cultural walk led by members of the Batwa community, Mgahinga’s original forest dwellers. They demonstrate traditional hunting, fire-making and medicinal plant use, and lead you into Garama Cave, a long lava tube where Batwa women often perform a moving traditional song. Fees from the trail directly support Batwa families.
After your activity and lunch, you begin the drive back to Kigali via the Cyanika border. You arrive in Kigali in the evening, with drop-off at your hotel or the airport. If you are flying out, we recommend booking an evening or late-night flight, or staying one more night in Kigali.

Always ask your operator for a written, itemised list of inclusions before paying, so there are no surprises.
The total price depends on your accommodation level, group size and season. The biggest fixed cost is the gorilla permit, set by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA).
| Visitor category | Gorilla permit (per person) |
|---|---|
| Foreign non-residents | US$800 |
| Foreign residents in Uganda | US$700 |
| Rest of Africa | US$500 |
| East African citizens | UGX 300,000 |
Golden monkey permits typically cost around US$100 per person for foreign non-residents. UWA reviews its tariffs periodically and has offered seasonal promotions in some low-season months, so confirm the latest rates when you book.
As a general guide, a 3-day Mgahinga safari from Kigali costs:
Solo travellers pay more because they cover the full vehicle cost, while groups of three or four save noticeably. For a transparent, personalised quote, contact our team.
Mgahinga has only one habituated gorilla family and issues around eight permits per day, so early booking is essential. We recommend reserving three to six months ahead for the dry season and at least one to two months ahead in quieter months. Recent UWA rules require full payment when the permit is booked, and standby permits are no longer sold.
To book, simply send us your full name as it appears in your passport, nationality, passport number, preferred trekking date and one alternative date. We confirm availability, secure the permit with UWA and send you a copy. If Mgahinga is sold out, we can arrange permits in Bwindi’s nearby Rushaga or Nkuringo sectors, keeping the same 3-day structure.
Mgahinga is open all year, and gorillas are seen almost every day. The seasons simply change the experience:
Because Mgahinga sits at high altitude, mornings are cool year-round and showers can occur in any month. Pack for both sun and rain whatever season you choose.
This safari crosses from Rwanda into Uganda and back, so you need permission to enter both countries twice. The easiest option for most travellers is the East Africa Tourist Visa, which costs about US$100, is valid for 90 days and allows multiple entries between Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya. If you land in Kigali, apply online through Rwanda’s immigration portal before travel.
Some nationalities enjoy visa-free entry or visa on arrival in Rwanda and then need a separate Uganda e-visa. Whatever route you choose, make sure your Rwanda visa allows re-entry on day three. Uganda also requires a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate, so carry it with your passport.
At Cyanika, the process is simple: exit stamp on the Rwandan side, a short walk or drive, then entry at Ugandan immigration. Your guide will assist throughout.
Mgahinga’s trails lie between about 2,200 and 4,100 metres above sea level. Treks can be steep and muddy, but anyone with reasonable fitness can manage with steady pacing. Regular walks and stair climbing in the weeks before your trip will help. Golden monkey tracking is usually easier and suitable for most visitors.
The minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15 years. Visitors with colds, flu or other contagious illnesses will not be allowed to trek, because gorillas are highly susceptible to human diseases. On the trail, keep at least seven metres from the gorillas, speak quietly, never use flash photography, do not eat near the animals and respect the one-hour visit limit.
Remember that Rwanda bans single-use plastic bags, so leave them at home.
You will spend two nights in or near Kisoro, and there is accommodation to suit every budget.
Staying close to the park means shorter early-morning drives on trekking days, more sleep and more energy for the trails.
One of the best things about starting in Kigali is how easily you can extend your trip. Here are popular add-ons our guests choose:
If you would rather drive yourself, a cross-border 4×4 from the Kenlink Tours car hire fleet or our self-drive partners lets you explore at your own pace, though we recommend a guide for the border and the park road.

Mountain gorillas are endangered, and tourism plays a vital role in their protection. Your permit fees fund ranger patrols, veterinary care and community projects such as schools and health centres around the park. You can increase your positive impact by hiring a porter, buying crafts directly from local artisans, following all trekking rules and choosing locally owned operators. Every responsible visitor helps ensure the gorillas of Mgahinga thrive for generations to come.
Is three days enough for a Mgahinga gorilla safari from Kigali? Yes. Three days gives you a relaxed travel day, a full gorilla trekking day and a third day for golden monkeys or culture before returning to Kigali.
How far is Mgahinga from Kigali? The drive is about four to five hours, including the Cyanika border crossing. Ntebeko gate is about 14 km from Kisoro town.
Can children join the safari? Children under 15 cannot trek gorillas, but families can enjoy Lake Mutanda, community visits and, depending on age, golden monkey tracking while adults trek.
What if it rains on trekking day? Treks go ahead in light rain. A good rain jacket, waterproof boots and gloves will keep you comfortable.
Are gorilla sightings guaranteed? No wild animal sighting can be guaranteed, but the Nyakagezi family is found on almost every trek. In the rare event that they are not found, UWA policy provides a partial refund.
Can I combine Mgahinga with Rwanda’s gorillas? Yes. Many guests add a trek in Volcanoes National Park for a double gorilla adventure. Browse more ideas on Kenlink Tours Rwanda safaris or our own destinations page.
