Gorilla Trek in Mgahinga with Golden Monkeys. High on the slopes of the Virunga volcanoes, in Uganda’s far south-western corner, lies one of Africa’s most beautiful and least crowded primate destinations. A gorilla trek in Mgahinga with golden monkeys lets you meet two of the region’s most remarkable primates in a single park: the mighty mountain gorilla and the rare, playful golden monkey.
Mgahinga’s slogan says it all: this is where silver meets gold. The “silver” is the silverback mountain gorilla; the “gold” is the golden monkey, whose bright orange-gold fur glows among the green bamboo. Add towering volcanoes, ancient caves and the living culture of the Batwa people, and you have a safari destination like no other.
At Pick and Transfer Safaris, our home base is in Kisoro, just a short drive from Mgahinga’s gates. In this guide we share everything you need to plan your Mgahinga gorilla and golden monkey adventure: the park, the Nyakagezi gorilla family, golden monkey tracking, permits and costs, getting there from Kigali, where to stay, other activities and sample itineraries.
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is Uganda’s smallest national park, covering about 34 square kilometres in Kisoro District. Small as it is, the park packs in dramatic scenery and exceptional wildlife. It forms part of the Virunga Conservation Area, a cross-border protected landscape shared with Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park and the Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The park is dominated by three dormant volcanoes:
The park’s vegetation changes with altitude, from farmland edges and bamboo forest to montane forest, alpine meadows and giant lobelias near the summits. This rich mix of habitats supports mountain gorillas, golden monkeys, buffalo, bushbuck, many bird species, including Albertine Rift endemics, and a wide variety of plants.
For travellers who want a short, scenic and varied primate safari, Mgahinga is hard to beat.
Mountain gorillas are one of the world’s most endangered great apes, and the Virunga volcanoes are one of only two places on Earth where they live; the other is Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Trekking them in Mgahinga is an intimate, unforgettable experience.
Mgahinga has one habituated gorilla family open to visitors: the Nyakagezi group. For many years, this family was famous for wandering back and forth across the borders into Rwanda and Congo, which made trekking in Mgahinga unpredictable. Today, the Nyakagezi family has settled in Mgahinga, so permits can be booked with confidence.
The Nyakagezi family is known for its unusual social structure, with several silverbacks living together peacefully, alongside adult females, juveniles and infants. Watching multiple silverbacks share a group is a rare sight and gives a fascinating insight into gorilla family life. Like all gorilla families, its size changes over time as babies are born and members leave or join.
Because there is only one family, just eight trekkers per day can visit the Nyakagezi group. That makes Mgahinga one of the most exclusive gorilla trekking experiences in Africa, but also means permits sell out quickly, so book early.
Early morning: after breakfast, you drive to the park headquarters at Ntebeko, at the foot of the volcanoes. Rangers welcome you, check permits and give a briefing on gorilla trekking rules, safety and the Nyakagezi family.
The trek: trackers set out before you to locate the gorillas from where they nested the night before. Your group of up to eight trekkers follows a ranger guide and armed escorts up the volcano slopes, through farmland edges, bamboo forest and montane vegetation. Trails can be steep and muddy, but the scenery is breathtaking, with views of Muhavura, Gahinga and Sabyinyo all around. Treks typically take from one to several hours, depending on where the family is feeding.
The hour with the gorillas: once you reach the Nyakagezi family, you spend one magical hour watching them feed on bamboo shoots and leaves, groom one another, play and rest. Silverbacks may sit calmly nearby while youngsters tumble and climb. Many visitors find this hour deeply moving.
After the trek: you return to the headquarters to receive your gorilla trekking certificate, then relax at your lodge or join an afternoon activity.
Many travellers combine the two for a double gorilla trek. Learn more about Uganda’s largest gorilla park on our Bwindi Impenetrable National Park guide.
These rules protect the gorillas from disease and stress and keep visitors safe.
If gorillas are the stars of Mgahinga, golden monkeys are its sparkling supporting cast. Tracking them is lively, light-hearted and full of photo opportunities, a perfect complement to the intensity of a gorilla trek.
Golden monkeys are a striking, endangered primate found only in the Albertine Rift, mainly in the bamboo forests of the Virunga volcanoes. They are a type of blue monkey, distinguished by their glowing golden-orange back and cheeks contrasting with black limbs and a dark crown.
Golden monkeys live in groups and spend much of their day feeding on young bamboo leaves and shoots, as well as fruits, flowers and insects. They are fast, agile and endlessly curious, leaping between bamboo stems and chattering to each other. Because their bamboo habitat is limited and under pressure, protecting places like Mgahinga is vital to their survival.
Golden monkey tracking starts at the Ntebeko headquarters with a briefing from your ranger guide. Your group then walks into the bamboo zone on the lower slopes of the volcanoes, where the habituated golden monkeys live. Compared to gorilla trekking, golden monkey treks are usually shorter and less strenuous, often taking one to a few hours in total.
Once you find the group, you spend one hour watching and photographing the monkeys as they feed, play and leap through the bamboo. Because they move quickly, you will be rewarded for patience and a steady camera.
For primate enthusiasts and photographers, Mgahinga also offers a longer golden monkey habituation experience. You join researchers and rangers as they work with a group of golden monkeys, spending several hours observing their behaviour and learning how habituation works. It is a quieter, more in-depth experience and an excellent way to get exceptional photographs.
Golden monkey tracking is far more affordable than gorilla trekking. A golden monkey permit costs around US$60 per person for foreign non-residents, and the habituation experience costs more. Prices are set by the Uganda Wildlife Authority and can change, so confirm the current rate when you book. Your tour operator can reserve golden monkey permits alongside your gorilla permit.
Golden monkeys can be tracked in both Mgahinga in Uganda and Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, which share the same Virunga habitat. Uganda offers lower permit prices and a quieter experience. Rwanda’s golden monkey treks are easy to reach from Musanze. Many travellers combine both countries on one trip, as on Kenlink Tours’ 4-Day Rwanda–Uganda Golden Monkey and Gorilla Trekking safari.
Doing both activities on consecutive days gives you a wonderful contrast. Gorilla trekking is powerful and emotional, an hour in the presence of gentle giants. Golden monkey tracking is energetic and joyful, full of movement and colour. Together they offer a complete Virunga primate experience in just two days.
Mgahinga sits close to Kisoro town in south-western Uganda, near the borders with Rwanda and Congo. There are three main ways to get there.
The fastest route for most international visitors is to fly into Kigali International Airport. From Kigali City, the road runs north through Rwanda’s green hills to Musanze and on to the Cyanika (Kyanika) border, roughly two and a half to three hours’ drive. After border formalities, it is a short drive to Kisoro town and on to Mgahinga’s Ntebeko gate. Most travellers reach the park area in around three to four hours from Kigali, making Mgahinga the closest Uganda gorilla park to Rwanda.
You will need visas for both Rwanda and Uganda, or an East Africa Tourist Visa, plus a yellow fever vaccination certificate for entry into Uganda. Always check current entry requirements before you travel.
The drive from Entebbe or Kampala to Kisoro takes about eight to ten hours via Masaka, Mbarara and Kabale. It is a long day, but it passes through beautiful scenery and can be broken with stops at Lake Mburo or Lake Bunyonyi.
Scheduled and charter flights connect Entebbe with Kisoro’s airstrip, cutting the journey to around two hours. Flights are more expensive but save a full day of driving. Our hotel, Ikoro Hotel, sits opposite Nyakabande Airstrip in Kisoro.
Permits are issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority and booked through licensed tour operators. Current prices for foreign non-residents are:
UWA has announced that from January 2027, discounted low-season gorilla permits return for April, May and November (US$600 for foreign non-residents). Rates may change, so confirm current prices when booking.
Because Mgahinga issues only eight gorilla permits per day, it is important to book as early as possible, ideally several months in advance, especially for June to September and December to February.
Your total budget depends on the length of your trip, group size, accommodation and transport. Typical costs include:
Sharing a vehicle and choosing budget or mid-range accommodation can significantly reduce the cost per person. Contact us for a free, itemised quote.
Mgahinga is open all year round. The dry seasons, June to September and December to February, are the most popular, with firmer trails and clearer views of the volcanoes. The wet seasons, March to May and October to November, bring more rain and muddy paths, but also fewer visitors, lush scenery and, from 2027, discounted gorilla permits in April, May and November.
Because Mgahinga sits at high altitude, mornings and evenings can be cold, and rain can fall in any month. Pack warm layers and waterproof clothing whatever the season.
Hiring a porter at the trailhead is highly recommended. Porters carry your bag, help you on steep slopes and earn valuable income for their families.
Gorillas and golden monkeys are only the beginning. Mgahinga offers a range of activities that make it worth staying an extra day or two.
Climbing one of Mgahinga’s volcanoes is an unforgettable adventure for active travellers:
All hikes are guided by rangers. Start early, carry plenty of water and warm clothing, and expect cold temperatures near the summits.
The Batwa were the original inhabitants of the Virunga and Bwindi forests, living as hunter-gatherers for thousands of years. On the Batwa Trail, Batwa guides lead you through the forest, demonstrating how their ancestors hunted, gathered honey, used medicinal plants and made fire. The trail ends at Garama Cave, a large lava-tube cave once used as a refuge and meeting place, where the Batwa perform traditional songs. It is a moving and educational cultural experience that directly benefits the Batwa community.
Mgahinga is home to many bird species, including several Albertine Rift endemics. Highlights may include the Rwenzori turaco, handsome francolin, Rwenzori double-collared sunbird and dusky turtle dove. The Gorge Trail between Mount Gahinga and Mount Sabyinyo is especially rewarding for birders.
Gentler nature walks follow the park’s lower slopes and the gorge between Gahinga and Sabyinyo, offering chances to see birds, plants and smaller wildlife without the effort of a summit climb.
Most visitors stay in or around Kisoro town or close to the park’s Ntebeko gate. Options range from budget guesthouses to comfortable mid-range lodges and upmarket lodges with volcano views.
Our own Ikoro Hotel is an ideal base. It sits opposite Nyakabande Airstrip at the foot of the Virunga Mountains, about 15 km from Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and 36 km from Bwindi. Guests enjoy comfortable rooms, beautiful gardens, genuine hospitality and easy access to both gorilla parks. See rooms and details on the Ikoro Hotel website.
We will recommend the best accommodation for your budget and trekking dates when we plan your safari.
Because Mgahinga and Bwindi’s southern sectors (Rushaga and Nkuringo) are both close to Kisoro, it is easy to combine them for a double gorilla trek in Uganda: one hour with the Nyakagezi family in the volcanoes, and another with a family in Bwindi’s ancient rainforest. Seeing gorillas in two very different habitats makes the experience even richer.
The Cyanika border connects Mgahinga with Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park, so you can easily trek gorillas or golden monkeys in both countries. Rwanda also offers chimpanzees and canopy walks in Nyungwe Forest National Park and primates and birding in Gishwati-Mukura National Park.
Popular Rwanda add-ons include our 2 Days Volcanoes Gorilla Trek from Kigali and 5 Days Best of Rwanda Primate Safari. Kenlink Tours also offers a 3-day gorilla trekking safari in Volcanoes National Park, a 6-day Rwanda adventure with great apes and Lake Kivu and a 5 Days Uganda Rwanda Double Gorilla Safari.
Here are some of the most popular ways to plan a Mgahinga gorilla trek with golden monkeys. Every itinerary can be tailored to your dates, budget and interests.
Day 1: drive from Kigali through the Cyanika border to Kisoro and check into your lodge. Day 2: trek the Nyakagezi gorilla family, then return to Kigali. This short trip is perfect for travellers with limited time. See our 2 Days Uganda Gorilla Tour Starting from Kigali or Kenlink Tours’ 2 Days Uganda Gorilla Safari Starting from Kigali. Trekkers must be at least 15 years old. Golden monkey tracking, nature walks and cultural activities can be good options for younger family members; check age limits with your operator.
Neither is better; they are different. Mgahinga offers volcano scenery, golden monkeys and a very exclusive trek with one family. Bwindi offers more gorilla families, more permits and dense rainforest. Many travellers visit both.
A gorilla trek in Mgahinga with golden monkeys is one of East Africa’s most rewarding primate experiences. In one small, spectacular park you can sit with a family of mountain gorillas, watch golden monkeys leap through the bamboo, climb volcanoes where three countries meet and walk with the Batwa through their ancestral forest, all just a few hours from Kigali.
