How to Get from Kigali to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. If you are wondering how to get from Kigali to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, you have already made a smart choice. Kigali, Rwanda’s clean and modern capital, is the closest international gateway to Uganda’s Virunga volcanoes. While travellers starting in Entebbe face a road journey of nine to eleven hours, visitors flying into Kigali can reach the park in roughly four to five hours, crossing one of the most scenic borders in East Africa along the way.
Still, planning a cross-border journey can feel daunting if you have never done it before. Which route is best? Should you hire a private driver, rent a car or take public transport? What happens at the border, and which documents do you need? How long does it really take, and what does it cost?
At Pick and Transfer Safaris, we drive this route every week. Our office sits on the Kabale–Kisoro road, just minutes from Mgahinga, and transfers from Kigali are at the heart of what we do. In this guide, we share everything you need to know about getting from Kigali to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park quickly, safely and comfortably.
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park lies in Kisoro District, in the extreme south-western corner of Uganda, right on the borders with Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. It protects the Ugandan slopes of three extinct Virunga volcanoes, Muhavura, Gahinga and Sabyinyo, and is home to the Nyakagezi mountain gorilla family and a habituated troop of golden monkeys.
The park forms part of the Virunga Conservation Area, together with Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park and Congo’s Virunga National Park. In fact, Mgahinga sits on the far side of the very same volcano chain you see from Musanze in Rwanda. This geography is exactly why the journey from Kigali is so short.
The park’s main entrance and gorilla trekking starting point is Ntebeko gate, about 14 km south of Kisoro town.
The most direct route from Kigali to Mgahinga runs north-west through Rwanda to the Cyanika border, then into Uganda via Kisoro. Here is how it breaks down:
| Leg | Approx. distance | Approx. time |
|---|---|---|
| Kigali to Musanze | 95–105 km | 2–2.5 hours |
| Musanze to Cyanika border | 25 km | 30–40 minutes |
| Border formalities | — | 30–60 minutes |
| Cyanika to Kisoro town | 10 km | 15–20 minutes |
| Kisoro to Ntebeko gate | 14 km | 30–45 minutes |
| Total | About 145–155 km | About 4–5 hours |
The roads in Rwanda are smooth tarmac, and the Ugandan stretch from Cyanika to Kisoro is also paved. Only the final section from Kisoro to Ntebeko gate is partly unpaved and climbs toward the volcanoes, which is why a 4×4 vehicle is recommended for the last leg.
There is also a longer alternative through the Katuna (Gatuna) border near Kabale, which then follows the winding Kabale–Kisoro road. This takes around five to six hours and is mainly used when travellers combine Mgahinga with Lake Bunyonyi or Bwindi.
This is why we created our Uganda gorilla safaris starting from Kigali, and why other experienced operators such as Kenlink Tours also recommend Kigali as the most convenient gateway.
| Option | Travel time | Comfort | Cost level | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private transfer or guided tour | 4–5 hours | High | Medium–high | Most travellers, gorilla trekkers |
| Self-drive car hire | 4–5 hours | High | Medium | Independent, experienced drivers |
| Public bus and local taxis | 6–8 hours | Basic | Low | Backpackers with flexible time |
| Helicopter or charter flight | Under 1 hour flying | Very high | Very high | Luxury travellers |
Each option has its advantages. Below, we explain how each works so you can choose the best way to get from Kigali to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park for your style and budget.
For most visitors, a private transfer with a professional driver-guide is the best way to get from Kigali to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Your driver collects you from Kigali International Airport or your hotel, handles the border crossing and delivers you directly to your lodge in Kisoro or to Ntebeko gate on trekking day.
The benefits are clear:
Most travellers combine their transfer with a full gorilla package that includes permits, accommodation and meals. Popular options include our one-day Uganda gorilla safari starting from Kigali, the 2 days Uganda gorilla tour starting from Kigali and the 3 days Uganda gorilla safari from Rwanda. For comparison, see the Kenlink Tours 2 days Uganda gorilla safari starting from Kigali.
Because our vehicles and drivers cross at Cyanika regularly, the process is smooth. On some trips, a Rwandan vehicle may hand you over to a Ugandan vehicle at the border, which is completely normal and keeps everything compliant with cross-border regulations.
If you enjoy independence and are a confident driver, a self-drive trip from Kigali to Mgahinga can be a rewarding adventure. You set your own pace, stop wherever you like for photos and explore side trips such as Lake Burera, Lake Ruhondo or Lake Mutanda.
To self-drive across the border, you will need:
We can help arrange a suitable vehicle through our self-drive partners, and the Kenlink Tours car hire fleet also includes safari-ready Land Cruisers. Many travellers choose a hybrid option: renting a car with a driver, which combines flexibility with local expertise.
One important tip: Rwanda drives on the right, while Uganda drives on the left. The switch happens at the Cyanika border, so stay alert in the first few kilometres after crossing.
Budget travellers and backpackers can reach Mgahinga using public transport, though it takes longer and requires several connections. Here is the typical route:
The whole journey usually takes six to eight hours, depending on connections. Public transport is affordable, but it is not suitable for gorilla trekking days, because you must be at Ntebeko gate by 7:30 am. If you travel by bus, arrive in Kisoro at least a day before your trek.
Also keep in mind that buses and minibuses can be crowded, luggage space is limited and schedules can change. Keep your valuables secure and carry small amounts of Rwandan francs and Ugandan shillings for fares.
There are no scheduled commercial flights between Kigali and Kisoro. However, travellers on a luxury budget can arrange private helicopter or light aircraft charters that fly over the Virunga volcanoes, reducing the journey to under an hour in the air. Charters must be booked well in advance and depend on weather conditions and landing permissions.
Another option is flying within Uganda. Domestic flights connect Entebbe with Kisoro Airstrip at Nyakabande, just outside Kisoro town and opposite our Ikoro Hotel. This is useful if you are combining Mgahinga with other Ugandan destinations, but for travellers already in Kigali, the road journey is usually the quickest and most practical choice.
The road from Kigali to Mgahinga is one of the most beautiful drives in East Africa. Here is what to expect along the way:
Take your time and enjoy the scenery. For many travellers, the drive is a highlight in its own right.
The Cyanika border post is the gateway between Rwanda and Uganda on the route to Mgahinga. It is a small, relaxed crossing compared with the busier Katuna/Gatuna post, and it is used daily by tourists, traders and local residents. Here is how the crossing works:
The whole process typically takes 30 to 60 minutes, depending on queues. Borders are generally open from early morning until late evening, but opening hours can change, so always check with your operator before travelling, especially if you plan a very early crossing on a one-day gorilla trip.
Getting from Kigali to Mgahinga means entering two countries, so the right documents are essential.
Keep all documents together in a waterproof pouch for easy access at the border and the park gate.
A few practical details can make your journey much smoother:
Once you reach Kisoro, the final step is getting to Ntebeko gate, the starting point for gorilla trekking and most other activities in Mgahinga. The gate lies about 14 km south of town. The road is partly unpaved and climbs steadily toward the volcanoes, with spectacular views of Muhavura and Gahinga.
The drive takes around 30 to 45 minutes in a 4×4 vehicle. During the rainy seasons, sections of the road can become muddy and slippery, so a standard saloon car is not recommended. On trekking day, plan to leave Kisoro by about 6:30 am to arrive at Ntebeko in good time for the 7:30 am briefing.
If you are staying at a lodge right on the park boundary, the drive may only take a few minutes. If you are travelling independently, ask your lodge to arrange a reliable driver for the trip to and from the gate.
Yes, it is possible to trek gorillas in Mgahinga on a single-day trip from Kigali, but it requires careful planning. Departure from Kigali is usually around 2:00 to 3:00 am so that you cross the border and reach Ntebeko gate before the 7:30 am briefing. After your trek, which can last several hours, you drive back to Kigali, arriving late in the evening.
This option suits travellers with very limited time, but it makes for a long and tiring day. For a more relaxed experience, we recommend at least one night in Kisoro. You can compare both approaches with our one-day and two-day Kigali-based safaris.
The route from Kigali to Mgahinga is well travelled by tourists and generally safe. Rwanda is known for its low crime rates and orderly roads, and Kisoro is a friendly, welcoming town. As with any travel, use common sense: keep valuables out of sight, avoid driving at night when possible, follow your guide’s advice and use licensed operators and registered vehicles. Travelling with a reputable local company adds an extra layer of security and support if anything unexpected happens.
