Quick Weekend Gorilla Tour in Uganda. You do not need a two-week holiday to stand face to face with a mountain gorilla. For thousands of expats, aid workers, business travelers and East African residents, the gorillas of southwestern Uganda are a weekend away. Leave work on Friday, trek on Saturday, and be home by Sunday night with a story you will tell for the rest of your life.
This guide shows you how to plan a quick weekend gorilla tour in Uganda in 2026: whether two or three days is really enough, the best weekend itineraries from Kigali, Kampala and Nairobi, what it costs (including resident rates), where to stay, and the small planning details that make a short trip run smoothly. At Pick and Transfer Safaris, weekend gorilla trips are one of our specialities, because our base in Kisoro sits right between Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
Yes. A weekend is enough for a gorilla trek in Uganda, as long as you plan the route carefully. The trek itself takes one day. The rest of the time is travel. From Kigali, the southern Bwindi sectors and Mgahinga are only about four and a half to five and a half hours away by road, so a Friday-to-Sunday trip is comfortable. From Kampala or Entebbe, the drive is much longer, so a weekend usually means either a long weekend of three or four days or a domestic flight one way.
A two-day trip is possible, but it is tiring. Three days, such as Friday to Sunday or Saturday to Monday, gives you a relaxed pace with a proper night’s sleep before the trek.
A quick weekend gorilla tour from Kigali typically costs about US$1,300 to US$2,200 per person for foreign non-residents when two people share a private vehicle, including the US$800 Uganda gorilla permit. Foreign residents of Uganda and East African citizens pay lower permit rates, which makes weekend trips especially good value for people living in the region.
The main costs are the permit, the vehicle and driver-guide, and one or two nights of accommodation. Booking for a group of friends lowers the cost per person because the vehicle is shared.
If your timeline is even tighter, our guide to last minute gorilla tour booking explains how we secure permits within days.
This is the easiest and most popular quick weekend gorilla tour, ideal for anyone living in or flying into Kigali.
Friday – Kigali to the gorilla parks. Your driver-guide collects you from your office, home or Kigali International Airport around midday. Drive north through the green hills to Musanze, cross into Uganda at the Cyanika border, and continue to your lodge near Rushaga, Nkuringo or Mgahinga, arriving in time for dinner. Uganda drives on the left and Rwanda on the right, so you will notice the switch at the border.
Saturday – Gorilla trekking. After an early breakfast, head to the ranger station for the briefing. Trek into the forest with your group of up to eight people, and spend one magical hour with a gorilla family once you find them. Return to the lodge to relax, or take a short community walk in the afternoon.
Sunday – Return to Kigali. After a relaxed breakfast, drive back to Kigali, with photo stops at the Virunga volcanoes. You are home by mid-afternoon, ready for Monday.
Our 2 Days Uganda Gorilla Tour Starting from Kigali and 3 Days Uganda Gorilla Safari from Rwanda follow this plan. Kenlink Tours offers similar weekend-length trips, including the 2 Days Uganda Gorilla Safari Starting from Kigali and the 3 Days Bwindi Gorilla Safari Starting from Kigali.
If you truly have only one day, our 1 Day Uganda Gorilla Safari Starting from Kigali leaves Kigali in the very early hours, reaches the park for the morning briefing, and returns late at night. It is a long day with two border crossings and a trek in between, so it suits fit, determined travelers. For most people, we recommend at least one night near the park. Kenlink’s 2 Days Rwanda to Uganda Gorilla Trekking Safari is another good short option.
From Kampala, Bwindi is eight to eleven hours by road, so a standard weekend is tight. There are two good ways to make it work:
Option A – Drive on a long weekend (Friday to Monday).
Option B – Fly one way to save time (Friday to Sunday).
Our 3 Days Uganda Gorilla Safari is built for travelers starting in Entebbe or Kampala, and Kenlink runs a 3-Day Uganda Gorillas Safari. Domestic flight seats are limited, so book them as soon as your permit is confirmed.
Take a Friday morning flight from Nairobi to Kigali, which takes about an hour and a half. We meet you at the airport and drive straight to the southern Bwindi sectors or Mgahinga. Trek on Saturday, return to Kigali on Sunday, and catch an evening flight back to Nairobi. If you can take Monday off, add a night in Kigali to explore the city. See our Kigali City guide for ideas.
If you have a public holiday or can take an extra day, add one of these to your weekend:
| Weekend trip | Start point | Typical price per person (2 sharing, foreign non-resident) |
|---|---|---|
| 1-day express | Kigali | About US$1,200 – US$1,500 |
| 2-day weekend (1 night) | Kigali | About US$1,300 – US$1,800 |
| 3-day weekend (2 nights) | Kigali | About US$1,500 – US$2,200 |
| 3-day weekend with domestic flight | Entebbe | About US$2,000 – US$2,800 |
| 4-day long weekend by road | Kampala | About US$1,700 – US$2,500 |
Prices are indicative and include the gorilla permit, private transport, driver-guide, accommodation and meals as listed. Solo travelers pay more; groups of three or four pay less per person.
Under the Uganda Wildlife Authority tariff for July 2024 to June 2026, gorilla trekking permits cost:
The gorilla habituation experience costs US$1,500 for foreign non-residents. If you live in East Africa, bring proof of residence or citizenship, because rangers check documents and the rate on your permit must match.
For comparison, a gorilla permit in Rwanda costs US$1,500 for foreign non-residents. That is why many Kigali-based expats cross to Uganda for their weekend gorilla trek: it is close and much cheaper. If you do prefer Rwanda, our 2 Days Volcanoes Gorilla Trek from Kigali is a good weekend option.
For weekend trips from Kigali, the southern sectors win every time:
From Kampala or Entebbe, Buhoma in the north is easiest by road, and the Kihihi airstrip serves it by air. Ruhija in the east is good if you want a quieter trek. Because weekend dates are fixed, flexibility on sector is the easiest way to secure a permit.
You need to sleep close to your trekking sector because briefings start early. Each sector has a range of lodges, from simple community camps to comfortable mid-range lodges and luxury forest retreats.
Near the southern sectors and Mgahinga, our own Ikoro Hotel in Kisoro is a convenient, good-value base opposite Nyakabande airstrip at the foot of the Virunga volcanoes. It is about 15 km from Mgahinga and 36 km from Bwindi, ideal for a weekend trip from Kigali.
By road from Kigali: The quickest gateway for weekend trips. The road is good tarmac to the border at Cyanika, with gravel sections near the Bwindi trailheads.
By air from Entebbe: Domestic flights to Kisoro and Kihihi save a long day of driving. They are ideal for Kampala-based travelers on a weekend.
By air from Nairobi or other regional cities: Fly to Kigali and continue by road.
Self-drive: Residents with their own 4×4 sometimes drive themselves. Kenlink offers 4×4 car hire and our partner site arranges self-drive safaris in Uganda. On a tight weekend schedule, though, a driver-guide who knows the roads and the border is usually faster and more relaxing.
Weekends book first. Saturday treks are popular with residents, so weekend permits can sell out sooner than weekday ones. Book a few weeks ahead if you can, or ask about a Friday or Sunday trek if Saturday is full.
Public holidays are busy. Long weekends around Easter, Christmas, New Year and national holidays in Uganda, Rwanda and Kenya bring a rush of regional travelers. Book permits and lodges early for these dates.
Umuganda in Rwanda. On the last Saturday of each month, Rwanda holds Umuganda, a national morning of community work, and traffic is restricted for several hours in the morning. If your weekend falls on Umuganda, we plan around it, usually by leaving Kigali on Friday instead of Saturday morning.
Border timing. We plan departures so you cross the border comfortably in daylight and reach your lodge before dark.
Dry seasons (June to September and December to February): Firmer trails and easier driving, but the busiest months for permits. Plan ahead.
Wet seasons (March to May and October to November): Muddy trails and afternoon rain, but greener forest, fewer visitors and better permit availability, which is ideal for short-notice weekend trips.
Gorilla trekking runs every day of the year, so any weekend can work with the right planning.
Pack light. You only need a small bag for two or three days:
A gorilla trek can last from one hour to most of the day, on steep and muddy trails at altitude. You do not need to be an athlete, but you should be able to walk for a few hours on hills. Hiring a porter makes the trek easier and supports local families. If you are concerned about fitness, tell the rangers at the briefing so they can assign you to a family that is easier to reach.

Yes. From Kigali, a Friday-to-Sunday trip to Bwindi’s southern sectors or Mgahinga is comfortable. From Kampala, a long weekend or a domestic flight makes it work.

From Kigali, a weekend trip typically costs about US$1,300 to US$2,200 per person for foreign non-residents sharing a vehicle, including the US$800 permit. Residents of Uganda and East African citizens pay lower permit rates.
Foreign residents with valid residence documents pay US$700 per person for a gorilla permit under the current UWA tariff, instead of US$800. Bring proof of residence on the trek.
Kigali is better for short trips because it is much closer to Bwindi’s southern sectors and Mgahinga. From Kampala, consider a domestic flight or a long weekend.
Ideally a few weeks ahead, and earlier for public holidays and peak season. In the low season, we can often arrange a weekend trip within days.
